"We can now confirm that the new ATI card will consume around 250W. The currently fastest ATI, R580+ or Radeon X1950 XTX consumes up to 125W i a worst case scenario and heavy 3D while you can suck up 145W out with the dual chip X7950 GX2 card."

Bugger. Looks like crossfire will actually need a PSU towards the 1000W end of the scale.

    Cooling it should be fun.

Wonder what the next batch of nvidia will be like!

Don't believe everything you read on the Inquirer they are far more often wrong then they are right (especially articles from Fuad Abazovic).

Even assuming there was a shred of truth to that figure it could be for some dual/quad setup as ATI are switching to an internal SLI like connector for the R600 generation and each card has two connectors on it for some as yet unknown reason.

Rys of Hexus and now the editor of Beyond3D a man definitely in the know has already commented that figure is nonsense & I'm very inclined to believe him more than Fuad (<-who barely understands the topic he often reports on, just posts every crazy rumour he gets to generate hits & moves on).

Doubtfull, the max recommended over pciex 1 is 150watts. Now I know Ati cards exceeded that slightlt, but they are not going to flaunt it that badly. Also there are some technical reasons why no current chips that output that much heat.

Ps, Inq is a rumour mill. The only things they are right on is news rehashed from other sites.

The Inquirer has started debunking its own rumour that it spread

The Inq wouldn't be "so bad" as it is if they actually got rid of Fuad he is the main culprit who needs a clue badly, though I suspect they know & keep him for the outlandish rumours etc that draw traffic to the site.

Ah, they could always jam a molex connector onto the card.

Id say they'll be going for the external power supply.... Seemingly Nvidia are doing the same... Sure Asus did it with the 7800gt Dual
