Moyross Demonstration

Today I shall mostly be arranging a demonstration against the anti-social behaviour on Moyross over the last week (and many years). The aim of this demonstration is to show that the Limerick people do care about what is happening there and want something to be done about it.
It will be held (hopefully) at cityhall at two this Saturday.

Please let me know of anyone I should contact to arrange this, I will be ringing the guards, the local newspapers and radio stations during the course of the day. What politicians should I inform, who are the nearest councillors for the area.

Ok so, the guards say go ahead, Saturday at 2 it is, the Post said who do you have speaking, and many said they will get back to me.

What I need is a speaker, someone who can say a few words, I can but I doubt anyone will take notice.

    Suggestions please.

the ones who know what needs to be said.

I haven't been at a good lynching since 1879. I'll be there with my torch and pitchfork.

John Gilligan would probably speak for you and maybe Jan O Sullivan

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 173 ✭✭scrattletrap

I was talking to Jan and she said she will see what happens during the week.
I only had an email address for John Gilligan, so emailed him to ask if he would speak, he hasn't gotten back to me yet (if anyone has a number for him please pm me with it, thank you)
I have been in contact with the Moyross Community centre and was told that the manager was out but would get back to me, hasn't today, so if hasn't by two tomorrow I'll try ringing them again.
I just feel it is about time we got off our bums and actually went out there and said enough is enough, nothing will change until we do this.
While ringing around I kept being asked who I worked for, I work for no one in that regards, I am just the mother of two small children, a mother who intends to raise her boys in this city and not be worried that in ten years time one of them will be "accidentally" shot because he looks like some drug dealer or another.
I have made up a poster (attached) tomorrow I will be photocopying it and putting it up in shops around the city.

    Good for you.
You could also try our very own minister Willie O'Dea.

I've Maurice Quinlivan's phone number here if you want it. He is also a local councillor for the area. PM me if you want it.

Also give Diarmiuid Scully a holler, he might also speak for you.

His contact info is on his site
    http://www.diarmuidscully.com/
When asked to write an article for the limerick blogger he jumped straight in and was very accomodating.

and Stark, kindly leave out the smart remarks. i refer you to the Charter.

Thanks Billy, I'll give those two a ring today.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 173 ✭✭scrattletrap

I've rang both those numbers but no answer I will try them again after lunch.

I handed about thirty posters out to city centre shops (visited more shops but they weren't allowed to put up posters), I have a few very good response and only one bad one, they didn't want to take the poster as they had Moyross people as customers, I explained that it was to support the people of Moyross, but they were having none of it, ah well you can't win them all.

I am finding this harder than I thought, if any of you have had experience of this sort of thing please pm me with advice.

    Thank you all.

Billy you got there ahead of me was also going to suggest Maurice he is an excellent speaker

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 173 ✭✭scrattletrap

Couldn't get either of those guys on the phone so left Maurice Quinlivan a message and sent Dermid Scully an email.
Was interviewed today for both the Limerick Leader, Irish Independent and Irish Examiner, hopefully that will further the cause.
The campaign is not to say that Moyross is a terrible place be to say that the people of Limerick want to stand side by side with the people there and not have this swept under the carpet.

he says that although he knows my heart is in the right place that the campaign might be hijacked for the wrong reasons.

did he gave an example? would be interesting what the wrong reasons are in his opinion....

I've got myself my big-wig speaker, and hopefully I'll get some more before Saturday.

All is going well, I now have three 'official' speakers, so that takes a little bit of the pressure off me. Hopefully enough people have heard about it by now and will be there.
I've done a few radio shows now, not G Ryan though.

(and hopefully the rain will have gone away)

This is the press release, I didn't know about the Evening Herald, thanks Billy, I have other possible speakers but the ones below are confirmed:

    21/09/'06
Press Statement – for immediate release

A spokesperson announced today that a Solidarity Rally will take place in Limerick this Saturday, September 23. This Rally is to show solidarity with all those in Limerick City affected by violence and anti-social behaviour.
The Solidarity Rally will begin at City Hall at 2pm, with words of support from local councillors, Maurice Quinlivan, Diarmuid Scully, John Gilligan and members of the public.
It will be a peaceful rally. The strength of numbers will do the talking.
The general public is invited to take part – Make our community of Limerick a better place for us all.

i hope it goes well for you.best of luck.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 173 ✭✭scrattletrap

This is the last report before the Rally, everything is going ok, I hope the rain holds off for the two hours I need it to (from 1 to 3 so people wont be put off coming out).
I have my speakers and my loud speaker, I have my speech written but I have lost my voice, so I will be rather gravelly saying it.
Hopefully all the advertising has paid off and we will have a big crowd (soon you will never see my face again, yeah!)

Thank you all for your support (I need it, my nerves are frayed at the moment.)

Once again 2pm, City Hall, Today.

    Sharon.

Well I'm back, it went well we had over two hundred people there, there would have been more but people turned away when they saw the UN display and thought they would have to pay to get through, that was disappointing.
The Junior Mayor a Sixteen year old boy from South Hill, had a wonderful speech, he brought it all home to me.
The general consensus by the others that took the stand was that if nothing happens this month that we should do it all again and again until something is done. (what have I let myself in for)

If any of you were there thank you.
