Any recommendations on what material to use to fix a six inch tear that I have on the black material lining my roof under the tiles and visible when in the attic?

I tried a strong thick adhesive tape to no avail.

    Regards

the black stuff is more than lightly bitumen based felt which is v difficult to get anything to stick to.

However ideally, it should be done from the outside to stop any rain getting in.

Given that that is prolly not possible, what u might try is a product called Flashband which is a bitumen based tape, or more correctly called flashing and there is also a primer which u paint on first on the area u need to put the flashband.

U can ask in the HW store if it will work, I dont know.
