I'm sure this question has been asked over and overe but here goes. I'm starting in Trinity in October and I want to improve my self defense. I will definately be taking up boxing and I also want to take up a martial art...I have a choice of Aikido,Kenpo,Karate, Judo and Tae Kwon Do.

Could i get some good advice from people on which is the best for real life use. I would like to be a bouncer, and you can appreciate self defense is important. So any advice on which is the most "useable" would be great. Thanks

    Hi Nikolaite

A option you could think about is Silat. The style of silat I teach has both empty hands and weapon defences. It works in all ranges of combat. Its a fun exciting option .There are classes in Firhouse, Walkinstown and Lucan and from Sat 14th Oct there is a new city center Class every saturday at Club Vitae. If you like more info or have any questions feel free to PM me aor you can check out www.silateurope.com Hope this helps

Modern day door work has very little to do with how well you can handle yourself! When you go for your first door job (if you haven't got one already) I would bet my car they don't ask you what martial art you have done or if you can handle yourself.

To be a decent doorman all you need is the gift of the gab and a bit of confidence. Having a strong physical presence is important too (PC for "being big"). Generally once something kicks off on the door there are no winners anyway. You can't possibly train for all the variables that you will encounter in a fracas on the street no matter what combination of arts you chose or how hard or long you train.

In short training for self defence is a lie. Try martial arts for fun, health and maybe even to get fit you'll enjoy it an awful lot more!

I'm involved in the Judo club. www.tcd.ie/clubs/judo and I would think that would be the best choice out of all the options available.

As someone up above said, being on the door has more to do with your presence and personality than what type of martial art you do... that being said if a fight erupts there'll probably be less trouble, and fewer lawsuits, if you don't kick them several times in the face while ejecting them.

I would say try all the MA's available to you, find the one that suits you best then go for that. I don't like all the high kicks of Tae Kwon Do, doesn't make it a bd martial art, just not the one for me.

IMO I'd pick Kenpo but thats because I do it myself. I find it very enjoyable and quite intense, I've gotten very fit through it.

As someone said try them all and then make up your mind, its got more to do with personal preference than anything else.

Ok well, I think I need to clarify my question then. I need to know which is the most effective in real life usage eg which would be taught to special forces. I want something practicalnot just for showing off.

I think you have a naive view of martial arts and self defense and lack understanding of how related things work. I'd encourage you to train in striking and grappling and the best on offer is boxing and judo, as which I've stated, I'm an active member of both. If you're looking for some tricks to turn you into Steven Seagul I'd suggest you look elsewhere.

Boxing and Judo, not only are they the most effective available to you they are also likely to mature your attitude to martial arts quite quickly. Good luck with it and don't forget Bridgestone Mauy Thai is only a 15 minute walk from Trinity.

    Peace

I think everyone was naive when they first started out in Martial Arts. Why not just skip the pointing out of naiveté and go straight to the advice?

nikolaitr, I dont know if you got my PM, but why dont you take advantage of some free training and come down to the club tomorrow or on Thursday. We can have a chat and any questions you have about the style and Martial Arts in general we'll answer to the best of our ability. Ill PM you my phone number if you want to have chat.

    Good Luck,

    Dave.

    Ok, well a few things.

If you want to get into door work (and heaven only knows why you's "like" to be a bouncer) and your wondering which style is more applicable to the door I'd recommend you take Judo. In all my year's on doors (15+) I've used a rear naked choke in probably more than 80% of incidents where I went one-on-one with someone. Its 'clean' and doesn't look violent to by stands (witnesses ;) )

Getting back to what Mr.Leonard said. You won't be asked if you've done any martial arts training by any bar/club manager or even the company your going to work for. If you ring a security company (PM me if you need a number) you'll just be cannon fodder until the find you a door where you fit in with the lads.

And when you do start on the door don't start mouthing off about doing martial arts, the lads won't care and if you let yourself down (ie do a runner) you'll not only look like a coward but a foolish one too.

But really, Judo is more suited to door work than the rest you listed as you'll most likely be working inside for along time and won't be throwing too many punches. Judo will equipe you with the ability to handly most fights inside.

Having covered that. Martial arts is a life style and if your only thinking of it to compliment your job your really on the wrong forum I think, because most of the guys here have a real passion for MA and won't understand (or try to) where your coming from.

    I missed this one.

Drop into a few clubs and check them out. Most are only too willing to let you spectate. Eventually you'll find one you like.

They are all effective in one manner or another, and all have their stories of being used to defend against attack. I personally know a guy who has defeated 4 attackers using Aikido and another that took down 3 using Karate. Krav Maga is taught to the Israeli defence forces, Mori Sensei teaches Aikido to State and Federal police and Special Forces in Australia and a couple of other countries... I dare say that the Korean defence forces learn Tae Kwon Do.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, find the one that suits what you want to do... if choke holds would really help you out, try Judo, if punching and kicking is more to your liking go for Kenpo... joint locks and other throws go for Aikido. Visit some of the dojo's around your area and see what they have to offer and what you like.

Yes, on the scale of 1-100 of effectiveness, some of them score 1 and some of them score 90
and all have their stories of being used to defend against attack.

yes the internet and martial arts are full of anecdotal evidence. Fictitious stories. like the following

For evidende of the effectiveness of judo and boxing go watch the olypmics.

    QUOTE]

    Very true.

Can't confirm the first but I saw the second. He was our head of security and ex-SAS, plus had 15 years of Karate under his belt (Goju Kai or something that sounds very similar)... he waved away the other security guys and then took down the 3 that were waiting for him after work.

Then again, this being the internet, believe what you like and take it all with a grain of salt.

Even if your story is true what exactly is your point? An SAS guy beat up 3 other guys, by the way, he's trainined in Karate. So if you train in KArate you'll be able to beat up 3 other people.

The fact he waved away his back up, and went out of his way to get in this fight, this guy sounds like a retard.

nikolaitr asked some specific questions, I gave some answers to those questions. He wanted to know about real world effectivemess and Special Forces MA training and I answered them with what I knew, nothing more, nothing less.
