Harwood was sent off for the challenge. Bobby Moncur said possible broken ribs. Fortunately for Newcastle that's our strongest position.

Edit: Harwood only booked not sent off. Nick Collins reported it was his second booking but obviously not.

Poor old shay, looks like the stress of keeping goal for newcastle behind their back 4 for the last 10 years is finally catching up to him :(

What has that got to do with him getting his ribs kicked in?

    Absolutely no relevance.

    From Rte.ie:
Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given has had stomach surgery following the injury he picked up against West Ham.

The 30-year-old was taken off with four minutes remaining at Upton Park after a collision with Hammers striker Marlon Harewood.

Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder told nufc.co.uk: 'Shay has had surgery to repair a small tear in his lower stomach.

'He is comfortable and will have a short stay in hospital.

'We'll let things settle down now and it's too early to be putting any date on when he'll be expected back.'

Ouch! Sounds nasty. I wonder if he'll be back in time for the Czech game.

Minimum 6 weeks after something like that, so no chance of playing v Cyrpus or Czech.

    Bring on Fat Pat!

Although he missed the SheffU game at the weekend. Anyone know whats wrong with him?

I think we'd get over it if we lost Robbie Keane.
    Shay should be our captain.

He's had a good history of recovering well so fingers crossed.

Oh dear, I hope that whatever is wrong with Kenny isn't serious, he's had a great season but he's still not anywhere near the class of Given.

Feck it but why did Kiely have to retire.

Hasn't Wayne Henderson also lost his place in the Brighton first team? Things don't look too rosey.

I think he's a free agent! Either him or another Irish keeper was released

Afaik he wanted out of Brighton and Leeds were keen on him. Don't know if he was released or not.
Anyway, all this Irish qualifying talk, let's not lose perspective. I hope Shay makes a full and quick recovery first of all.

Newcastle keeper Shay Given has spoken for the first time of the agony he suffered in the wake of his clash with West Ham striker Marlon Harewood.

The 30-year-old Republic of Ireland international needed emergency surgery after he suffered a small tear to his bowel in a collision with Harewood during the Magpies' 2-0 Barclays Premiership victory at Upton Park on September 17.

Given was stretchered from the pitch hoping he had only been badly winded, but the full extent of the damage only became clear later.

He said: "I felt a lot of pain as soon as he hit me. I was very badly winded and I was struggling to breathe, to be honest.

"But eventually I was stretchered off and thought it was easing. I got my breath back a little bit and felt it was just a very bad knock and I was winded.

"I had a shower and when I got out, I got hit by pain I have never felt before in my life in my lower abdomen.

"It is hard to explain how that pain was, but I passed out for nine or 10 seconds, probably from my body shutting down.

"The surgeon said it was like someone pouring acid into your stomach, that is the sort of pain I was feeling.

"I have had injuries before, but never pain like that, so it was pretty serious."

Given was rushed to hospital and underwent surgery to repair the tear.

He spent a week under the careful eye of the medics before being allowed to return to the north-east to begin his rehabilitation.

He is likely top be out of action for another five weeks or so, but he is happy just to be on the mend.

Given told the Newcastle World section of the club's official website: "I remember most of it, but the best part of the day for me was to get knocked out for the operation because the pain started to go away.

"For three or four hours, it was pretty bad."
