In light of recent posts on this forum and other forums, I have decided to see what people really think about the ryder cup and the fact that certain roads will be closed around the area, the fact that, even if you live beside the K Club, you have to go to a designated parking facility, the fact that you are needed to hand over passports etc. upon entering.

So the Question is does it really Bother You, I think it will be interesting to see the reaction

And If You Open the Thread, Dont be afraid to vote, It Wont bite you!!:D

Its once in a lifetime, third biggest sporting event in the world. We complain about things in Ireland not been organised enough...now that something is bein organised enough, sure lets complain about that. It might be different if i lived there but think of the smaller amount of taffic around the area with the Park & Ride services.

how is it the third biggest sporting event in the world?

More people will go to the two all ireland finals this year than will go to the the K club...:)

it's considered the third biggest sporting event in the world due to the viewership globally.

    1. Olympics
    2. World Cup
    3. Ryder Cup

moan moan moan is all some people will do, i'm looking forward to it, it's only for a few days and is fantastic for our economy, tourism etc etc...

you clearly want to just moan and whinge about the ryder cup. do your own googleing.

How is it fantastic for tourism?

All the overseas visitors are being ripped off and will discover what an over priced experience Dublin (and Ireland) really is.

Rugby internationals do as much for our economy and they are every year...

No. Prove you points. You show me how it is the third most viewd event in the world. I think you want to believe the PR.

    Look what i found.

I'd be amazed if the ryder cup viewing figures came anywhere near american football this year

And tom Humphries has an interesting column

    2004...most watched sporting events

    1. Football: Euro 2004 final Portugal v Greece 153 million
    2. Olympic Games: opening ceremony 127 million
    3. Olympic Games: closing ceremony 96 million
    4. American football: Super Bowl 95 million
    5. Olympic Games: men's 100m metres 87 million
    6. Olympic Games: men's 200m freestyle swimming 66 million
    7. Formula one: Monaco grand prix 59 million
    8. Football: Champions League final Porto v Monaco 56 million
    9. Basketball: NBA finals 25 million
10.= Tennis: Wimbledon women's singles final 21 million
10.= Tennis: Wimbledon men's singles final 21 million
    12. Cycling: Tour de France final stage 16 million
13.= Football: FA Cup final Millwall v Man Utd 9 million
13.= Horseracing: Grand National 9 million
    15. Rowing: University Boat Race 5 million

    Another interesting article

    Totally agree Dave.

K Club is a typically bland, boring yank designed course. We have so many superior course on this island but money talks these days.

Ruggie those stats are dodgy, 9 mill watched the FA Cup in UK not world (x10 for that). Dave the reason for Ryder Cup is being held at K Club is as much practical as commercial, can you imagine getting that carnival in and out of Portmarknock or Lahinch or Waterville every day for example?

I'm very open to correction, Mike. Those were the best figures i could find. Can you find more accurate figures? Can you prove that 90 million people watched it around the world.

Anyway all i was trying to prove is that the Ryder cup is small fry viewing wise, no matter what the PR people would like us to think. On the other hand those viewing tend to have a considerable amount of spending power, relatively speaking.:D

They knew but this is Ireland! I suspect Portmarnock (the obvious links candidate) would'nt be able to cope on a simple physical level. Ruggie I can't prove the FA Cup figure but its seen global either live or delayed live in dozens of countries. I imagine in Argentina, Japan, China, Brazil and Germany it would pull millions assuming a tasty final pairing (Millwall was why it only got 9 million UK in 2004).

edit found this but as its from the FA I would'nt trust it!

Its been 25 years since a links course has held the Ryder Cup. Obviously the wealthier parkland (country clubs) courses are paying more to have it. Belfry has had it the last 4 times in England and the other in Europe was at Valderrama.

And of course the parkland courses havent suited the americans in quite a while. :D

I dont live in the area so I cant comment on any inconveniences that the locals have to endure but we are driving up from Limerick for the four days and quite happy to do so even though it means leaving about 5.30 on competition days.

For me its more about being present at a huge sporting occasion. I play golf and watch golf on TV and have loved watching the Ryder Cup in the past so I wasnt going to miss this. I know I would see more on TV but hopefully it will all be worth it on Sunday evening.

Golf is very popular in Ireland, look at the amount of courses there are, and the amount in progress...

There is a lot of hype floating around, and to be fair imo a lot of the spectators at the event will be corporate types...

Yanks have known for a long time that Ireland is expensive, it still doesn't stop them coming though does it... if we believe the figures given to us by the tourism heads.

Personally i think the K Club is the right choice, especially from a corporate hospitality point of view, they are able to cater for the massive demands that will be there!

Now, lets stop whinging about the negatives, and look forward to this event. Cheering Europe on to hopefully a three in a row!!

My feelings on the matter have been clearly expressed in my discussion with hole-in-one on his/her thread.

It is very hyped. But every big event in the world is hyped in the locality that hosts it. This phenomonan is not unique to Ireland.

The whole shooting match is a sell out. I am looking forward to watching the competition (over in my parents house where they have Sky sports) but I'm sick to my eye teeth of hearing how great it is for little old Ireland to host it. I'm sure it's a wet dream come true for Ireland plc. but when the Irish fans who couldn't get lubed up and commercially reamed in Straffan can't watch it without paying through the nose, it is not good for the Irish. Imagine telling the hosts of the world cup or the olympics that they can't watch on TV without paying extra.

Also, I think with the dollar as weak as it is now, the ripping off the Yanks are going to get will leave a very bitter after taste and may well do some damage to tourism from America for a few years.

Coming from a all-round Golfing family, i can't help but get somewhat "caught up in" (or more specifically "subjected to") the Ryder Cup hoopla.

Am i excited? Not particularly. Is it good for Irish tourism? Not particularly.. more visitors will come yes. But as Ruggie said, they will get to experience to RipOff Republic for what it really is. Will i stop answering my own questions? Probably not! :D

i'm sorry dave i have to disagree with that, the open was held on links course this year as always, who won?
    Tiger; an american,
    who was second?
    Chris DiMarco; an american,
    who was fourth?
    Jim Furyk; an american.
in case your wondering who was third it was Ernie Els. the american team are more than capable of playing links.

The Ryder Cup is owned by a private company and is their right to sell it to the highest bidder. Ireland are only the hosts this year, its not an Irish event and there is no guarantee that any Irish will be playing in any given year so I dont see why it should be available free.

Speaking to a few people who were at previous competitions held in the US, its nothing new for those attending the matches to be ripped off. I am bracing myself for the prices later in the week.
