What sets your band apart from the rest?

Was out last night to see a couple of bands.

The first one we saw was an 80's/90's cover band.
They were good. High energy. Okay vocals, fair musicians.

But what set them apart from their competition?

The Keyboard player has an assortment of Foil Hats that he wears for each set they play!

I found that to be original and quite funny.

With my band, we kept a bag full of cheap novelty items next to the stage just in case someone broke a string and we'd have a lull in the music.

That's when I'd ask the audience for something such as Whomever has the ugliest driver's license, or who has the courage to down a shot of Ginger Brandy up on stage. The winner would get to pick a prize from the "Sack of Sh1t"! It was a big hit with the patrons, and we had fun stocking the sack with stupid things like bubbles, beer mugs, toy handcuffs, anything fun for a night out.

So... care to share any ideas that have worked well for you?

You may be better off that way. Most drummers are habitually late for rehearsals and gigs. (I said MOST, now. Don't beat me up!;) )

Something a little more substantial than a collection of foil hats, I should hope. Less gimmicky. But TBH I couldn't tell ya. I'd aim for it to be our songwriting and musicianship, though.

Not that it defines us or makes us stand out from the crowd, but I've thrown out fizzy cola lollies at a few of our gigs. A few months later I was talking to some girl... she had forgotten the band's name, but oh how she enjoyed telling me the tale of how she was hungry and then out of nowhere this band started giving out lollies. Job done. Nice.

we have some split tracks we use, like 30 seconds of noise, feedback, piano bits but all in key with the end of the last song and moving into the key of the next song. With the help of our sond guy the track fades up as our guitars ring out the last chord. We use a lot of different tunings so it avoids a few seconds of silence while we swap guitars or tune.
They're easy enough to record and you can be creative. I wouldn't go overboard on it though.

Our song "Wide" has a tiny bit of it at the start of the recorded track up on our myspace here www.myspace.com/bravestkidinschool

All that said, if you don't have the fundamentals you're wasting your time.

God forbid it's all about the...wait for it....MUSIC!

F*ck gimmicks. The Music should set you apart - not a feckin' clown suit, etc!
