They couldn't. The café might get in trouble but I doubt it.

Laws against it are a bit of a joke then. Imagine you bring your laptop once or twice a week to an internet caf, download to your heart's content, while another poor sucker downloads at home and risks being put in prison, even if downloads are only for private use.

I've heard of fines so big that the guilty party couldn't afford to pay it and ended up going to prison over it.
Also, I don't think you should be discussing how to bypass copyright laws.

Indeed, espec since the OP is already banned from comp/tech for said reason.

Officially its 100 grand per song (seriously)
In reality its about 3 grand (regardless of how big a collection you have)
Assuming you have more than a few hundred and less than a few hundred thousand tracks.

A friend of mine actually got pinched for this. :)
Think only 15 or 30 people got done for it.

    There are none.

Downloading copyrighted material, however, is another issue entirely.

in general, i imagine that only uploaders get into trouble within the EU for copyright violations. AFAIK there have been no court cases in Ireland (yet) regarding copyright violation for downloaded music.

    edit:
    http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/6289.cfm
there have been 17 cases, but as the text says, only heavy uploaders have been persued.

I didn't see the OP asking about how to bypass anything

irlrobins, moving this to Comp/Tech. Not sure if you still want it there or not. Just after getting back into town. Do what you will with it. Thanks.

Happy for it to continue for now. As long as it remains as a discussion on the risks of using p2p to download copyright material.

But if goes into how to download copyright material, or how not to get caught, etc, I'll start handing out bans.

If you are going to use p2p the learn about the risks.

make sure your system is patched up to date and you have antivirus, anti-spyware, a firewall that notifies you when something dials out, and a backup of your system files. Turn off any unnecessary services and make sure you are using an ADSL /cable modem that supports NAT.

up to half the downloads will be borked, because they have a payload, or not what it said it was on the tin, also you will have a lot of people downloading from you too, so you use up you cap a lot faster
