Waxoil... I have started

Right, I decided that my cars will NOT take another Irish winter without protection. I thought of giant condoms, but they are not practical. So I got the whole Waxoil kit. The family size can, the pump etc. the lot.

I am in the process of doing the right side of the inside of car 1 and will report on learnings for everybody's benefit.

Inside panels removed, drilled holes in the sills

One thing is already clear... what a mess.... :( I am probably spraying far too much of the stuff)

I am not looking forward to doing the underneath of the cars...

Tip one: keep the can of wax and the hose in a bucket of hot water. It helps limit the mess to the bucket (deal with the wife later) and the heat ensures the wax does not set and clogs the hose.

good tip, another Iwas told was to use a metal bucket and put it over a camping stove..

Just bought a large refill can of the soup. It goes much better: nice and liquid. I think that I had done the mistake of keeping my first can of Waxoil in the trunk of the car for 6 months: it gelified and was difficult to keep in liquid form after that. So, keep warm indoors when not in use.

With a bit of practice, I am getting to spray only what is need to cover the surfaces instead of spraying as much as I possibly can and eventually find mountains of the stuff dripping under the car.

I am now one third of the way through car 1 and getting better at it. I wish I had not bothered buying the spraying equipment though, it is rubbish: it leaks, gets stuck and clogged. The extension bit, is a ... plastic pipe with a ... nail at the end to supposedly create an even circular spray; rubbish. I am sure that a garden sprayer (the system you spray insecticide or fertiliser with) would be a million times better and more powerful. I wonder if they sell this kind of equipment at B&Q... Well worth the extra expense I think: will save on wasted wax.

Also one more thing, excess Waxoil that messes the driveway (it WILL mess up your driveway) can be cleaned up with washing powder overnight and a bucket of hot water to rinse it all in the morning: will avoid screams from the Missus and/or the management of the estate...

I got the clear Waxoil and hate to think what the black version would do...

Just a quick question Eric, do any movable parts, suspension, brakes, cables etc need to be protected when you do the job or is a case of spray/paint where ever.

From what I heard, everything should be waxed, if you dont want it to rust that is. All nooks and crannies in particular.

I believe that brake discs and pads can be spared :)

Ideally, wax needs to be reaqplied every year.

I have almost finished Waxoiling the Jag. It really isn't rocket science... just hard work. Overall it will have taken about 12 litres of the goo and I have wasted A LOT!!

I put a polythene sheet on the garage floor. As before, the main issue is to keep the wax in liquid form. I diluted it with 15% White Spirit and kept the container in a bucket with hot water. When the spray works, it is a very easy job. Inevitably, the wax starts solidifying in the application pipe when not in use and that is when is turns into hell...

I washed the whole underside, removed all inside panels, drilled a few holes to access the inside of the sills, removed the wheels, ... and sprayed.

The great thing is that the wax is also very effective on the paint work, to make it shine to overspray is actually good :)

Guys, DO IT and keep your classics on the road all year round!!!

Done mine a few weeks ago, wasn't as painful a process as I thought it would be.
I used a cheapo garden pressure sprayer from woodies (goes up to 45psi) and found it excellent to use and no problems with clogging as long as you keep it in a bucket of hot water.

It's great stuff, I waxoyled both my Stags with the stuff.

Wait till Summer comes though, make sure you park off the driveway for a few days :D

The heat melts the Waxoyl and you get drips all over the place

That's the only downside, and probably the reason you need to redo the job every few years.
