    No. is the short answer.

    There is a longer answer

You need to be hundreds of miles out to sea to see the satellite at all. 10 deg elevation is a realistic minimum, you are half way across the Atlantic before you get that.

If you are thinking of BBC TV on 28.2E

Normal satellites for New York does have BBC America Pay TV and probably BBC World TV free. www.lyngsat.com

    As Watty pointed out, no.
But here is a list of what is receivable fta (ku-band) across northamerica. http://eyeinthesky.net/cgi-bin/get-fta-programming_ku.cgi
No idea how accurate it is, though. Look up lyngsat for confirmation.
Found it earlier in the year while investigating for a friend in Toronto.

You could get family or friends back home in Ireland to get a Satellite/Cable TV, broadband and then use a Slingbox to stream the TV over the net to you in NY.

Poor picture quality unless upload is > 1Mbits. It is like mobile TV quality and will kill an Irish broadand cap. You would want an Irish account with 512K upload to get the 300k for poor picture.

WME9 is a cheaper more flexible alternative. An Xbox can be used to "receive".

The reality is that to get a quality even near a TV aerial quality you need 2Mbps UPLOAD n Ireland.

As far as I remember BBC WORLD (with ads) is available on Time Warner Cable and the Irish (RTE) News used to be fed on some network as I saw it on my cousins tv while there last year. Or you could get a sling box as bk suggested.

Dude, why are you always trying to slam my posts.

Look, I never said it was perfect, but it is a good solution if a person just wants to catch up with local Irish/UK news and current affairs shows, while abroad.

I'm not suggesting for a moment that he uses it to watch Prison Break in HD or anything.

Actually even at 300k upload, it is actually quiet good quality on a laptop.

VLC would be a better alternative to WME or even Orb. But Slingbox is relatively easy to setup.
