First things first, there is a block of unmovable files more or less right at the end of the HD when I defrag, as I want to partition my HD this is a bit of a problem. I am right in thinking that the unmovable files are to do with the page file? If so, if i change the settings of it will it move the unmovable files???

Also, once I get sort out those unmovable files I want to partition my HD so I can install another OS on my machine. Does anyone know of a good programme which will do this BUT does not format the part that has my current OS on???

I don't think it is anything to worry about, these would be the page files and they cannot be moved so they can't be fragmented. Partitioning will just use the free space (or however much you select). You could just use a bootdisk to go into DOS and use FDISK or one that I use to try was Ranish Partition Manager. As always make sure to backup before trying this.

Woh woh - FDISK cannot resize partitions - it deletes and creates them. The unmoveable files are the page file and some other system files that Windoze depends on.

You can use a partition manager like Partition Magic to resize your current partition downwards and leave empty space at the end for another OS. It's not free but it is very good.

Disclaimer: Backup all critical data. I've never had a problem with Partition Magic myself but any messing with partitions at such a low level is not without risk.

Oops misread the post. Especially make sure to backup when using Partition Tragic. :)

I have, so definetly back up data if you do get Partition Magic. After rereading your post I would not suggest resizing without backing up, because from my experience if you resize in this situation with Partition Magic you will loose the data on this partition.

Me and all *cries over many, many gigabytes of data lost* :)
