I upgraded last night from 2000 to XP but my sound is not working. I tried installing a Realtec '97 Audio Driver but during the installation the pc reboots and i get one of does critical error messages from windows.

Is there any universial sound driver i can use?

My mobo is the Asus A7V8X with onboard sound

It uses the Realtek ALC650 chip, the driver for which can be obtained here.

Hopefully that should sort it out.

Have you installed the VIA chipset drivers ?

Also have you tried the driver Asus provide ?
(On a side note Asus label the driver as Avance ALC650 cant recall seeing that before)

Updated XP to service pack 2 ?
