Heard this on the last word today, that 1 in 8 women still reckons that they cant get pregnant with their first shag!
Surely those days are gone, that used to be a joke amongst the girls I went to school with and thats 20 yrs ago.
Anyone think people are still that dumb?

Who did the research? Any details on the experiments? What age groups?

Seems fairly unbelieveable, but I'm not saying it's untrue!

I heard that as well, sex education is either not being taught or is not being taught well.

Irish women or women living in Ireland?
    Source?
(I don't doubt it, just want to read more about it)

I can imagine that such ignorance might still be rampant amongst the sweating tracksuited slapper community(as is proven by the amount of young wans pushing prams around blanch), but surely That doesnt account for 12.5% of the women in the country.

Sorry daveMG I dont know who did the research, but there was also a sizeable number who thought the pill offered some protection against std's.

The other part was that alot of women didnt know when they ovulate or when their most fertile times were, now this one I can sorta understand.

Mind boggling. :) I think I found the source of some of it. From Ireland Online news.
Many women still lack knowledge about contraception
    15/09/2006 - 13:38:27

A new study has found that many Irish women still lack knowledge about pregnancy and contraception.

One eighth of women involved in the research said they believe it is not possible to get pregnant the first time they have sex.

Elsewhere, more than half of those using birth control said they were taking the pill, but just one-in-eight were aware of its medical benefits.

The survey was commissioned by the drug company Schering to coincide with the launch of a new low-dose pill called Yasminelle.

you can use statistics to prove anything, 15% of people know that.

I'd like to find out a bit more about the age group involved in the research, cos I find it hard to believe that people could be so stupid!

Thanks Ruu, I listened to the news on the last word again, but it just says "that a new survey shows that......etc."

Any of our female boardsies care to comment?

Maybe they already have and im just presuming all the previous posters on the thread are male.

I agree i think more should be divulged about this report - being a woman i can honestly say that for a long time now i know the truth about this and the fact that someone can come out with a report saying that most women my age are stupid well that is just ridiculous.

Give me stats - give me age profiles, give me locations, give me education back ground and then i will believe this survey.

until then ... forget it ... pile of poo.

    women do know better.

People are stupid. Looking at the amount of (very) young wans pushing prams, I don't doubt it.

I always presumed that most teenage pregnancies were a mixture of hormones and heat of the moment, you know sorta "fcuk it we'll chance it" as opposed to just being ignorant of the facts.

I wonder how that myth about the first time shag got perpetuated? I cant even imagine any reason why the first time would be 'protected'

Seeing as 90% of bebo users believe in forwarding chain emails because "if ya dont dorward this your account will be suspended/your mickey will fall off/your whole family will be killed in a suicide attack on your house by Al Quaeda" then yes, I honestly do believe people are this stupid.

Now, forward me the names/numbers of these first ride no rubber women.

All research is flawed. This does not mean that there is no value in the conduct of research. What we need to know before we start getting excited about reported results from this survey is to take a peek at their research methodology. For example, the design of the study, sampling methods, confidence levels and intervals, and potential sources of bias would be valuable to know. One potential source of bias may be the source of the funding for the study: a private pharmaceutical corporation in the process of launching a new drug related to the study?

Or if they did the survey in the blanchardstown shopping centre:D

Another market-launch survey? Oh, that makes me confident in the results. And if you believe that, I have a elf to sell you who claims he can turn road apples into gold.

I think this calls for a poll op!!

    Doesn't surprise me.

The under-20s are ignorant as to sexual health and good practice, relative tp ten years ago when we were the children of the condom advertisements because society was STD-conscious due to the prevalence of - and poor treatment for - HIV and AIDs.

In the UK, 10% of sexually active women between the ages of 16 and 25 have chlamydia, an STD for which 75% of women and 50% of men who are infected experience no symptoms, but whose results can include pelvic inflammatory disease in women, swollen testicles and potential infertility in both sexes. Now these 10% of women are not getting chlamydia all on their own, so I personally think it's a fair enough presumption to say that probably 10% of sexually active men between the ages of 16 and 25 have chlamydia too.

Instances of syphilis and gonorrhoea have also risen in young people in both the UK and Ireland.

So no, it doesn't surprise me that apparently 12.5% of Irish women of a certain agegroup (I'm going to assume it's a young people's poll, if they still have opinions on their 'first shag') think you can't get pregnant when you have sex for the first time.

And yet there are still people on these boards who post on PI saying "sure if she looks like she's from a good family and she's not a skanger, she's not going to have an STD like".

Let's not forget "I think STIs are overhyped, I never use condoms" ¬.¬

    Oh and OP, I'm female.

Anyone remember the thread in PI not so long ago, from a girl who was worried that she was pregnant? It was her first time, iirc, and she said something like "he pulled out before he came, so I can't be pregnant, right?". There's a huge amount of ignorance, especially amongst younger women, as to what can and can't get them pregnant.

Personally, I've been fully aware of all the facts since I was 11 and started reading "Sugar" magazine.
