Help on installing new graphics card

I need to install a new graphics card as the one in my machine (its an 'SG prosavage' whatever that is) is old and they arent making drivers for it anymore -i looked on their site.
Its causing some kind of 'infinite loop' error while it waits for the hardware to become idle (or so the microsoft errror report says).
What i want to know is :whats the procedure when changing a graphics card? Surely if i remove the card i wont be able to see anything when i turn on the pc? Ive treid going into vga mode after one of the crashes but my monitor (acer tft) then displays 'input not supported'.

Firstly you would need to look at your options, i.e. where is the graphics card slotted into, is it a PCI slot/AGP/PCI-E.
Then you can decide where to go from there, i.e. if a new card is possible or at least to limit your choice.

What are the specs of the PC, obvisously if the card is very old, i can only assume the PC is the same.

Have you tried installing all of the latest updates for the version of Windows you are running?

An S3 Pro Savage that is pretty old my friend.

That particular chip was present on a lot of motherboards as integrated graphics, the drivers can be located at this link - are those the ones which are giving you the blue screen ?

Hi, thanks both for yr advice. PC is a clone using an AMD athlon xp1700. OS is XP pro but ive a feeling its cracked as it cant take updates via the web, tried it once and it crashed in weird way. Guy i bought it from didnt have intall cd so prob dodge.
The cable plugs into a port just under the mouse/keyboard ports so dont think its a pci deal (could be wrong though!) as pci slots are further down...

8T8 was right, it sounds like an integrated job, can you open up the box to see if you have an AGP slot, otherwise you would have to look for a PCI graphics card, and they are getting hard to find.

Even if it doesn't have an AGP you can still get basic graphics card with using the PCI interface fine for 2D usage but forget about anything 3D wise really.

Can you get to the desktop with the unit or in safe mode, if so run this application and tell us what kind of motherboard it says you have under the mainboard tab of CPU-Z. Specifically the model and chipset used as then we can point you to the correct driver for sure.

Also download and run Memtest+ to make sure it is not the RAM that is the cause of the BSODs.

Just on a side note: time for an upgrade? Your rig sounds way old.
