Have I found a bargain and will it work?

    Found this:

    123014.jpg

ADSL Connection for BT Phone Line
Modem Router with a 4-Port Switch
    Built-in High-Speed 802.11g
    Easy Connection to High-Speed broadband
Handy Pocket Size USB 2.0 Adapter
    2.4GHz Frequency Band

I need a wireless usb connector for my small form factor PC and then obviously I need the router to set up my wireless connection from that pc and another laptop.

Is this product okay, because its at an unbelievable price, but as Im new to this I wanted to make sure it would work?

    Also - it has 4 ports - I presume I can connect 4 pcs/laptops

Appreciate your advice so I can go buy it.

    Thanks

The four ports will be wired, while i think you can have as many wireless connections as you want connecting to it.

Even better as I would want a couple of laptops able to connect to it. Thanks Noelie.

Just to be sure - this is all I need to go wireless networking within the house then?

Yeah all you need is the Wireless router and then a wireless card in each laptop, not sure on the configuration, but my laptop automatically detects any wireless network, a word of advise, make your connection secure.

It's difficult to evaluate if it's a bargain, if you don't tell us how much it's going to cost you!

Need help now - can anyone help?

The router seems to have a standard phone 56k (type)line connection as its adsl connection point. I only have a cat5 cable from my broadband provider (its wired from the roof antenna) - do I need to get a cat5 to stand phone line adapter in order to connect it?

Wil try and get a picture of the connections so you know what I mean.

no no no do not get this!!
    Damn too late...

If you get it working.. fair play to you... Its an ADSL router.. not a standard router.. it will not route a signal from a LAN connection.. what YOU need is a standard router with a WAN port on it.

Actually you can get it working if you do EVERYTHING manually.... best thing do not open it and bring it back.

Here's a better view - with the "dsl connection visable" its only a standard phone connection, so how do I connect my broadband connection which is a cat5 cable?

Help much appreciated as I wanted to get this set up today?

    Feck it!

So I cant connect it using a cat5 cable connection then? Will an adaptor work?

No its nothing to do with the connection! Its the fact that this router routes a signal from the built in DSL modem.. this is only for people with ADSL like eircom or BT.
You can get routers that will work for about the same price... probably online but you might get lucky in PC world.

**** - this has already been opened and I can't really bring it back in its present condition - or can I....

I thought this could work from a lan connection (CAT5) as the description of the product make a note about work/office network set up etc.

Anyone got this working and again my question - can I jsut get a converter in order to connect the cat5 cable to the adsl router?

It says ADSL router on the box in big blue letters - what made you think you could use it if you don't have an ADSL connection?

If you'd mentioned that you don't have an ADSL connection in your first post, it would've been pointed out hat this isn't going to work for you. The people that did read your question made the reasonable assumption that, as you were asking about an ADSL router, you have an ADSL connection.

No, you can't just get a converter. The DSL modem that's built-into that device is there instead of the ethernet port than other, similar devices have.

Bring it back, or try to sell it on http://adverts.ie/ or Buy & Sell, and get a "Broadband Router" instead of an ADSL Router

If they will not take it back... then someone might exchange it for you on adverts.ie as usually combos are more expensive than standalone routers.. you got a bargain...... just the wrong thing... you could bring it back, say the sales guy gave you the wrong thing and you only realised after you opened it... However at the price you paid you might not get the right router in PC world and i doubt they will give you a refund as there is nothing wrong with it so sale of goods act does not apply.

Try swap it on adverts.ie... im sure people do the opposite to you and get a standalone router and then find they have no modem to plug in. so want a combo.

There's no reason to be smart about it. "big blue letters" as you call it caught out the sale guy too as I asked him about it and was told it would work

Saruman - thank for your advice.

I don't suppose you got that in writing, did you?

Did you tell the sales guy that you don't have DSL?

You can actually use this if you've only got one computer, but you'd be losing out on the basic firewall protect that a router provides. You'd be better off swapping it for the right gear. If you really want to go down that route, post a bit more information about your setup, including who your ISP is.

(As for being "smart" about it, maybe you should try it sometime. It can save a lot of hassle and grief).

To be fair, I don't think Foxwood was being smart.. In your picture in the first post, it does indeed say ADSL in big blue letters. I think he was just being helpful.

The simplest answer is to bring it back. You were sold a product which was not suitable for your intented purpose and were given incorrect information from the sales assistant. At worst, get a credit note, and use the money to purchase a Wireless router.. Something like this: http://komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=325785 would probably suit your needs.

Or Komplett has a special offer on this, you'd just need to pick up a USB wireless card.. Additionally PC World are selling a lot of this equimpent for very reasonable prices at the moment.

Thanks for the link Krusty, I will probably buy that combo from komplett and fingers cross I might be able to bring back the D-Link one.

No problem, but I wasn't suggesting you buy this particular one, just suggesting the kind of thing you should be going for. I bought my last wireless hardware from eBay... You can get it a lot cheaper, than buying retail, as you have people upgrading their wireless hardware constantly (e.g. switching to kit with better security, speedboost, greater range, built-in ATA, switching to cable, etc..).. Have a look before you buy but make sure it's what you need..

If you bought it online, you're entitled to a cooling off period, by law, so can return it unopened/undamaged for a full refund. You are still going to lose on the shipping costs though.

Yes but he didn't buy it online and he did open it.

ADSL wireless routers cost more than normal wireless routers so I reckon you have good chances of a swap on adverts.ie as others have suggested. Someone with a normal wireless router + an ethernet modem might prefer to condense into a single box.
