Does anyone know of a simple guide that explains how to go about this? Do I have to place a value on each of the items or how does it work?

in the long run, the easiest way to do this is aon a room by room basis using a spreadsheet, it taakes a little time to set up but is the best way of doing it.

You will be surprised at how it all adds up.

One area u need to check is re your flooring.

I remember there was an issue some time ago as to whether fixed floors, eg tile finishes are part of contents or building.

Also u need to see which catergory painting falls into.

The alternative is to go as a % of building costs - it really depends on the set up ie if u are a batchelor in a sparsely furnished apt, as opposed to a family of 6 in a big house.

Also if you have certain items of value you should name them on your policy. Its stupid really, we get contents insurance yet we have the name special items so they're 100% covered!! e.g. golf clubs, digi camera.
