    I hate this error message!

Trying to install XP on a hard drive which has no previous OS on it. I only have one hard drive connected into the pc. I have the bios set to boot from CD but i get NTLDR is missing.

    Any thoughts?

Your pc isn't booting from the CD for some reason, thats why you are seeing that message. Its still looking at the hard disk. Check the bios again and your CD, try it in a different CD drive if you have two.

    step 1

format a floppy disk on another windows nt/2k/xp/2k3 pc (boot sector)
copy the hidden files \ntldr , \ntdetect.com and \boot.ini to the disk

try to boot pc from this disk

    step 2

copy boot.ini from from the pc to the boot floppy you made earlier

    get a dos/win95/win98 boot disk with ntfsdos on it ( www.sysinternal.com )
you can use edit.com to open the boot.ini and save as to A: or xcopy /H or whatever
or use recovery console on a 2k/xp/2k3 cd
or favorite revcovery disk be it bartpe , knoppix or ubuntu live

try to boot pc from this disk with boot.ini on it
