I bought a 360 partially cos I no longer had a functional xbox but had loads of games.

I bought it and found that most of my games weren't and still aren't compatible with the 360.

Now I've just bought a brand spanking new flat panel monitor and official VGA cable only to find that the few remaining games are now unplayable cos they don't 'support' the VGA cable.

So no more HALO, Doom 3, Half Life 2 etc.

    :(

I buy a brand new monitor with which to enjoy high def gaming.

And find that I can no longer play HALO, Doom 3, Half Life 2,

You'll have to wait for doom 4, halo 3, and halflife 2, episodes one and two then :p

MS do like screwing people in the ass with their crappy emulation software that wont allow almost ALL xbox games work through vga. :(

How is it useless when at least some games work?
To be honest I haven't touched any Xbox games in 6months and have no desire to go back either.

I can't play any of the old games now, its was like when the ps2 came out, the ps1 games just weren'y good enough and didn't look good enough, just like the xbox now in comparison to the 360, Halo 2 definitly works through vga, not sure about 1, are you conected to live?! Have you updated?!

You could always pick up a 2nd hand xbox 1. They must be fairly cheap now!

Why not just throw the componant connection in when you want to play (unless it's a huge move to get a TV close to where you have set up, or unless you don't have one in the new house at all).

The games should work with the VGA cable, it's just that for some daft reason you cannot download the update whilst using the VGA cable. You should just need to plug in a regular TV for the download and then you'll be good to go again.

Really!??!? Well, in all fairness, I never tried HalfLife etc. on the tv.

Why the hell wouldn't an update work just cos of the cable? That makes no sense at all  I suppose I could unpacked the xbox and the tv tonight and update them before I move (and lose net access).

But my girlfriend will kill me (the entire moving schedule is worked out).

    Are ye sure about this?

I've only kept Halo 2 of my old games but the only way for me to get it to work was to run a long network cable out of the window so that I could make use of a TV in another room. Then it would allow you to complete the downloads and then once I'd plugged everything back together where it should be with the VGA monitor I could then play Halo2 on the 360 again.

But your right that it does not make any sense.

The VGA cable has a few issues alright, like some 360 games refusing to start until you connect through composite and set the refresh rate. Good luck anyway, report back with results!

This does indeed work as I had the same problems with Halo 2.
Half Life 2 and Doom 3, I never had though so im not sure.
