US repair-do I pay import taxes?

    Hi,

I am sending my ipod to the United States for repair. The repair company is sending me an empty box via DHL, which I send back to them with the item to be repaired- they then return it when repair is complete.
Will I be charged import duty on this item? I bought and paid Vat etc. in Ireland. How does this work? I gave a look on revenue.ie but it does not mention repairs.

I am not trying to dodge payment of taxes, but don't fancy the idea of being stuck for more Vat/taxes etc:(

I am not sure if this is the correct forum, if not please move it.

    Thanks

    G.

you will pay tax on the repairs.

    Thanks for the reply.

Will they know it was repaired? I am concerned that some dhl/customs bloke will think I bought it in the states, and slap a charge on it..

You shouldn't have to pay any duty, it is just a repair and you already bought it from inside the EU.

    Good news:)
Should I get ipodresq to mark the box before they send it back post repair- like you would mark something as a gift?

im guessing that since they have dhl boxes to send out that they have an account with the carrier who knows exactly what theyre shipping.

id confirm the above with the repair company,
and if thats not the case get a detailed receipt for your ipod from them,
a detailed invoice for the repairs and a detailed despatch notice in case you need to explain the situation to customs.

vat is 17% [i think] for services so you will need to pay that on the repair charge if customs stop the item.

That doesn't work (despite what people will tell you) but it shouldn't be an issue, contact the repair company to be sure like subway mentioned, will save you getting any nasty suprises. :)
