iTunes crash count growing

Looking for some advice! I am using an MBP running 10.4.7 and installed iTunes 7 yesterday. I has been a total nightmare. It has crashed with an 'unexpected error' about 30+ times since yesterday and I basically cannot use it at all.

What I have found is the majority of the time it will play an entire album or one song in any given directory but if the next song on the list happens to be a different artist/album it crashes. So if the artist, track, genre etc is different I can be guaranteed the app will close.

I have cleared my prefs (plists in user and main libs), deleted the app and .pkg files and reinstalled about 8 times. I am relunctant to roll back to 6 and would like to try and solve the problem in 7 if possible. I also deleted all my plug-ins and scripts - no joy

Running Quicktime 7.1.3 as suggested by Apple and I have restarted. Restarted after each of the various pref clearing and installation attempts, just to be sure.

Anyone else having trouble like this? Am I the only one? sniffle

Any advice would really be appreciated, thanks.

I've installed iTunes 7 on several Mac's yesterday, including my own MBP. I have not seen it crash once, and I'm using it all the time (playing music right now).

If I can think of anything, I'll let you know. Actually, can you try the following? Create a new user account in Mac OS X, put a few tracks in it, and see if it still crashes? If it doesn't, there might still be some pref file or corrupted library somewhere causing the problem. If that crashes too, you could try downloading iTunes from www.apple.com/itunes/ and installing it again.

And I don't think you're the only one, just unlucky.

Ok, I already have another user setup on this machine. I logged in there and played some tracks. I only had a limited number of tracks in that account so perhaps it was not a fair test but it allowed me to play a CD and change between tracks which is more than it will allow me to do as the admin user.

re downloading it and installing again.. I tried that about 4 times last night between clearing all the prefs and .pkg files.

    Apple's advice was:
Downgrading to iTunes 6.0.x In order to revert to an earlier version of iTunes (if you cannot solve playback problems, or for other issues), you will need to delete the following files:

    * The iTunes 7.0 application (located in /Applications)
    * com.apple.iTunes.plist (from ~/Library/Preferences)
    * iTunes.pkg (from /Library/Receipts)

You should then be able to properly use the iTunes 6.0.5 (or earlier) installer.

I did that last night before reinstalling a freshly downloaded version of 7 but it didnt help.

To me it sounds like your library could be corrupted somehow, causing issues? It's XML-based I think. As far as I recall there's a way to rebuild it, but I don't remember...

    Oh sigh!

Rolling back will be awful. Hate losing all the updates and everything. Ah well, seems I have no choice. Hopefully the problem wont carry over. But if it is library based it might? yeah?

loadsa people are complaining about crashola and new iTunes.

Is your library is a non-standard location? Have you tried rebuildiing your database? Have you repaired permissions lately?

Library is in standard location Users/X/Music/iTunes. Haven't tried rebuilding.. just read the link there.. seems to suggest you can just drag your iTunes music folder onto the dock icon, but surely that will just duplicate everything??

How do you mean about the permissions? Sorry, just want to make sure, being very careful what I do now :)

Find disk utility in Applications>Utilities, click on your disk and Repair Permissions. It's an aspect of regular OSX maintenance. You should also probably google Onyx and run some of the maintenance routines in that, like daily, weekly and monthly cron jobs.

Right, sorry hugh I know disk utility alright.. I just thought you meant something app specific that I didnt know about. I havent repaired permissions since deleting the prefs so Ill try that and see what happens, fingers crossed.

Ran disc utility repaired some iTunes stuff alright but has made no difference... still crashing. Grrrrrr

Thanks for all the suggestions btw, appreciate it.

Downgrade to iTunes 6 in the meantime and wait for iTunes 7.0.1 to be released. While I haven't personally experienced this problem, assuming you're not the only one with it (and I'd say that's a good assumption!), Apple is working on an update that'll fix it.

Running iTunes 7 on Windows XP and for the most part its fine, although I finsd the problems
    - If I play a track and ripp a CD at the same time it always crashs
    - If I open another application the sound starts to stutter and won't stop unless I close andf re-open iTunes.
    - When listening to songs sometimes all the sound switches to just the right speaker and won't switch back unless I change or restart the song

Never had these issues before.
Such a shame as really impressed with everything otherwise.

Just updated a PowerMac (PPC) and a MacBook Pro to iTunes 7 and both are fine.

When iTunes 7 starts it tries to get album art for all your tracks which makes it quite sluggish for a while. To do this is needs an internet connection. It also examines the library to determine settings for gapless playback again making it sluggish with large libraries. You can stop these by cycling through the displays in the info window at the top and clicking the x button to the right of each display. This needs to be done for each playlist you add. Hope this makes sense.

Also it would be a good idea to remove any visualiser or sound plugins until after you've added your library.

Thanks guys it works fine on my PC, no problems at all.

@zen, I have already removed all plugins and scripts and allowed iTunes to do its artwork and gapless playback configuration and all that.. made no difference at all.

No choice but to roll back until they find the problem I think.

440Hz, it looks like you've already tried almost everything, but this might still be helpful:
