Seeing as the N4 was mentioned on here recently, today saw 2 men fined over driving offences on that said road.

For those of us who trade in Miles, 193Kmph equates to about 119Mph.

120mph is taking the pi$$, they deserved to be fined €2000 and convicted of dangerous driving. I'm surprised they didn't get a ban.

You think thats bad. Try the Lucan By Pass late at night. Aftetr the Texaco to the Newcastle Junction and after the junction west bound is good for a night race ever now and again

Interesting article in the Irish Times questioning how Court Evidence (the tape that seized at the time from one of the cars) ended up on the RTE News rather than in the court. Who the hell do these Gardai think they are? the article indicates that other charges preferred by the DPP were withdrawn without reason with the suggestion being that the charges would not stand up given the availability of the tape outside the court. Would have more severe punishment been given out if they were guilty of more charges?

This has let Gay Byrne in a bit of a pickle where in criticised the sentence of the judge when in fact the situation was complicated by the Gardai allegedly leaking the tape to the media.

I just noticed the piece doesnt mention anything about any penalty points they got?

    Did they get any?

No. There are none for the charges they were convicted for.

The defendants appeared at Mullingar District Court this morning where they were fined €2,000 each after being convicted of dangerous driving.
Driver found to be driving carelessly (introduced 4 June 2004)
    M

    5

    Court Fine

    Driving without reasonable consideration
    2

    4

    €80

    €120

Surely while driving that fast on of these would apply

It's at the DPP's discretion what to charge them with, and he chose to go for dangerous driving.

What a load of ****! What kind of message does this send out when we are trying to develop a culture of road safety?

That you should watch your behaviour unless you consider €2,000 to be pocket money?

To many people these days it is- courtesy of their plastic friend.

Slightly off-topic the RTE News at 1 yesterday had a long discussion on this. This case has its own merits, however the suggestion was that sentencing does not match the offence.

One example mentioned was where a truck driver was going round a roundabout steering with his elbows and on his mobile.

The outcome in court €45 fine !!

People have lots of disposable income. I could afford a €2k fine. Just! And it be a struggle but if I lost my car I'd lose everything. Job. My house cause I had no job.

Are you talking about the fact that they leaked the film?
