Shortstack strategy

In a live €100 FO game last night I became shortstacked through a combination of bad cards and bad play. I had 5300 chips left. blinds 400 & 800 In the past couple of orbits I have sayed alive by robbing blinds with very mediocre hands. I am not getting any cards and I am losing patience. My table image would be tight.

With blinds about to go up to 500/1000 Player X in EP raises to 2500. At one from cutoff I look down to see KQo which represents the best hand i've seen in a number of orbits. Player X is a very good player who has been playing solidly but who is capable of making moves. He has over 20k in chips. If I push Player X will obviously call the extra 2800

    So....Fold or Push ?

Fold and open push next opportunity you get. This isn't 'the' player x you are referring to I am guessing. KQ could be in bad shape against a good few hands. I would rather push in this spot with 89 or the like. Of course he could have an underpair or Ax (not K/Q) but I still rather open push than be guaranteed a race (possibly very eneven race) with KQo.

I would say the likelyhood of him making a move in ep is lower than him making it in lp
you say he is solid so I would be suprised if he was making a move with out a least a hand ahead of yours under pp or ax which is close and a % of the time a completely dominating you hand of AK AQ AA KK QQ
so in all i think fold

What are the other stacks on the table. This is quite important. If player X doesnt think he is risking his stack it widens the range quite a bit. If there is a few other big stacks in later positions it makes it far less likely that its a move.
I would fold. Just because KQ looks pretty, doesnt make it any good. It's behind too many EP raising hands. And dominated by most.
I would much prefer to push with small connectors in a hand or two.

It depends what way have the flops been coming? ;)

In fairness the consensus seems to be to wait and open push and I can't argue with that unless you have a tell or something I'd fold.

In hindsight I shouldn't even have posted this, I guess I was hoping for some justification for making a bad play. In my defence I was not getting any cards and when I had something even remotely marginal someone raised before me. I guess frustration won out in the end.

If anyone is interested Player X ( not 'the' Player X, but I hate that villain/hero stuff) had AJ which I was relatively happy about until he flopped two aces.

    Nicky,

    Do you really push here?

Do you think a player, who the op's descibed as solid, is going to be raising from UTG with a hand that KQ is beating?

Dingle, was this in silks last night?

    No, Pokerevents in Greenhills, Limerick

Just wondering, I had almost the exact situation happen last night in silks, even to the blind level and chip count. I was player x in that hand and had AJ...scary!

He didn't say he was UTG. Next hand he will have 5 BBs left. With the blinds already represnting a almost a quater of your stack you're almost getting the correct pot odds to take a 6 to 4. It's time to gambole!! I'd be very happy to see AJ here.

I think we would all be happy to see Ax or any under pp here but we know this is the least of his range and i think AQ AK does essentially the same move and if that happens we are feeling foolish.
hence it should be a fold

This is the wrong time to decide to gambole. Why not for the last 3 hands or the next 3 hands? is it cause they look so perrrty? :D
4/7o open push is better than calling with KQ to this EP raiser.

If your looking for stategical advice, I would have been pushing before this hand. any hand that hadn't been opened i would probably push...until I move up or am knocked out. But calling when your likely to be dominated just doesn't sit right in the stomach

    Fold

You wanna push where there's one or two limpers, or where it's been folded around to you and you stand a decent chance of taking it down preflop. Not pushing into a ep raiser with kqo.
