on sunday tommy dennis won his category at the Heart of England Judo Championships

at the 'Supreme National Grappling Championships' on Saturday Arni Isaksson had a tough division and had lots of matches. he was using the comp as a warm up for his fight with paul jenkins on oct 1st. anyway he got bronze

caoimhe back from her recent mundial gold medal won the womens division, beating a polish girl by arm bar in 10seconds! she came 3rd in the mens -62 and won 'fighter of the day':)

and i got the gold in my division

Well done to all. I was going to start a thread but couldn't find the official details. I think tommy won the u81kg category (very competitive) beating 6 guys by ippon, didn't drop any points. 3 wins were by ne-waza (ground techniques) and 3 by throw. He one gold medal by arm lock conor flanagan stylee.

well done to john, arni, caoimhe.

John where is arni fighting paul jenkins (excuse my ignorance I don't know much about uk shows)

I'd assume cagewarriors.. That's where most of Arni's showdowns are..

Ha ha, i would simply say that if you can move up a weight category and still get the gold, there was no reason to be aiming for the lower one! :)

All the Spartans have started cutting weight, which means I've to eat extra chocolate bars so Cadbury's don't notice a decline in sales due to Sub Champ events.

Thanks I was just curious, cos I knew you'd been trying to drop weight lately.

So what competition will you be winning in October ?;)

You're on a bit of a winning streak..... hope it continues for a long time.

On a bit on a tangent, with regards to grading in BJJ.
Competitions play an important role in the grading of BJJ, right?
So if your steak continues could Ireland possibly have it's first black belt soon enough, or is there more to it than that?

not neccessarily, they are a good indicator of ability...but not the only one. competition is not for everybody, BJJ is :)

there's a lot more to it than that ;)

    but thanks for the props!

just grappling. good luck with your upcoming fight, if you need sparring partners you are more than welcome to drop out :)

if i may be so bold as to ask a direct question (or questions)

john are you going in the higher weight class cos you don't think you can physically make the lower weight and perform? you couldn't be arsed? or because there is a guy in the lower weight that may actually beat you? i've no insider info on this just wondering...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭john kavanagh

i'm sure there's guys in all the weights that can beat me! :D

tbh i just cant make the weight. in my younger days i could but i guess things are slowing down a little (30 in a few months!) plus i've gained a fair bit of lean muscle mass.

:) Cheers John! Top Offer. :)

I've got loads on over the coming weeks. (Moving house, visits to Holland etc) so let's hope I'm not toooooo out of shape by the time the fights come around. Still, should be a laugh. I'm looking forward to it.

    Congrats again!

just got this pic emailed to me and thought it was kinda cool :D it's me catching a 'rolling kneebar' at this comp...same tech i caught on Roper at the weekend ;)

    JKrollingkneebar.jpg

funny thing is i've done this technique twice in the past 2 years or so, both times in competition. hmm that 'training method' leading to strong fundementals paying off :)

isn't it cheating to do a rolling kneebar to one of your own students in a competition.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭john kavanagh

    1. No
    2. He's not my student

Sweet kneebar, nice to see it from another angle;) Its gone in the notebook for use later.

yeah fantastic. it was weird. I was watching some of JK's fights and I got a flashback of Dave Roache jumping thru my card and landing in a triangle. Then i saw some of his take downs and got a flashback from some in DIT Judo club abotu 5/6 years ago doing something simialr to me. All very weird.
