Can fax machines be used with Voice over IP at all?

Hit and miss. Mostly miss. Because fax (and modem) signals are very time-dependent any packet loss or latency can lead to an unsuccessful connection. Some VOIP providers have a fax-email gateway. For example, if you're a Blueface subscriber you can send a mail to their fax gateway with the fax attached as a PDF.

If you're an NTL customer, you can register with eFax.co.uk and you get a free local (0818) fax number. Any faxes received at this number are sent to you as an email attachment.
