    I tried to buy a Canon digital compact from amazon.co.uk today and was trold that this item can not be shipped to Ireland (UK Delivery only).
    I have previously bought cameras and other electronic equipment from amazon uk without any problems.
    Is this a new policy by amazon on canon /electronic equipment or has anyone had any other issues ??

    BTW, the price qouted on the canon website is HALF the price an Irish camera retailer qouted me for the exact same camera!

    Nope it is not just you, that policy has been like that for a few months now unfortunately.

    Not shipping electronic goods in general since around last April.

    Their excuse is something to do with the Disposal charges/taxes

    Try Technikdirekt.de or AC foto maybe...

    Did they stop selling electrical stuff because of the recycling fund lark ???

    I was googling around to try and find that out but no one can seem to get a straight answer about it. Some say it was to do with warranties and others say about the recycling thing.

    Ok thanks for the instant feedback.
    Just to clarify, I tried the site again and its not just Canon stuff, does seem to be all electronic goods, as others have pointed out.
    I can't believe thats another option closed off.
    Whatever happened to free trade in EU countries?
    Should it not be illegal to refuse to ship to a particular EU country?
    Anyway, thanks again for the feedback.

    Nope. It would be illegal if the Gov said we couldn't buy from them or if they were told not to sell by their gov or by manufacturers. If they decide themselves not to sell then its not illegal.

    One plausible sounding rumour I heard is that they were getting a lot of "my stuff hasn't turned up, send a new one" situations, more than they should be. And given that our useless postal service doesn't offer signed for delivery, they've no comeback.

    It's only illegal to prevent merchants selling across EU borders. The merchants must pay the relevant taxes in the destination country, if their annual turnover for that country is over a certain level (pretty low, around €50k), so it's up to them to decide whether they want the hassle of dealing with 24 other tax regimes. Governments are allowed more leeway with excisable stuff like booze and tobacco.

    <rant>
    The Irish govenrment for example puts plenty of hoops in the way of importing alcohol by mail order, making it next to impossible to find any company which will ship here, making for a few very contented middlemen in this country - all of which has absolutely nothing to do with cameras
    </rant and back on topic!>

    Try http://www.camireland.com . German based and decent service I gather.

    I got my 350D of Amazon.co.uk in February. I must have been the last one! :)

    My guess is thats its due to WEEE.

    But as the UK are (the last time I checked) also in the EU, shouldnt that become law there fairly soon also?

    What other online shops have stopped selling to Irish based customers?
