Anyone got any tips in regard to ebay ? Whenever I buy anything it always ends up to be about a euro cheaper than elsewhere...where are all the bargains ? Anyone found anything good ? Any tips in regards to bidding... ?

Moved from AH. Check out the seller thoroughly (time registered with eBay, feedback and previous items sold). If you see something that is far too good to be true, it probably is. Do not pay with Western Union or any other online money transfer programs as they are not covered by eBay, use Paypal. There are trading assisants in the stickies to help you out. If you are buying from the US or outside the EU, you will be hit with customs duty no matter what the seller tells you. If you are on dialup and bidding, my condolences. :)

Always find out what the postage costs before you bid. The postage can rack up the total cost till its not worth it, and overseas sellers dont often say upfront, so ask them. If you are getting outbid on a new item, search again. Sellers often sell multiples of the same thing and you may get it cheaper in another one of their auctions.

Yeah I know all this, cheers though! Sorry, wasnt aware there was an auctions forum.

My main problem is I cant seem to find any bargains...by the time you win an item and add shipping its barely worth buying as you can most likely get it for a few quid more new.

Are you buying from inside the EU? I have found a couple of things, mostly mobile phones, hard drives and the like. If you know what you are looking for it is great because you know how much your limit should be on the item. The majority of them using the "Buy it Now" feature, which still worked out cheaper than buying in the shop.

Ive been living in the states for the past 6 months and I have to say.....

We even get screwed on Ebay

(OK... I had no intention of making that rhyme... anyway)

Ive bought a ton of things from Ebay while over here and its so much cheaper.

    I got a 300GB External Harddrive in a Harddrive case for $120 :O

Last I checked they were 165 euro fomr Komplett

I suppose its only really worth it for big things. I got a couple of mobile phones for good prices over the years...

But if you are buying a dvd for example and its 4 sterling, shipping will be another 3-4 sterling which makes it a bit pointless.

(why do they charge so much for postage! it doesnt cost near that...)

Ok, here is my problem, I recently paid for two goods from the same seller. He/she is claiming that I have not paid for the goods. I am in the process of sending him/her 2 screenshots proving that I have paid for them. If after this they still don't accept my evidence is there anything else I can do??:confused::o:)

if you paid by paypal he doesnt have a leg to stand on and is trying to bull**** you. Keep all the messages he has sent you and if he keeps it up send them on to paypal/ebay.

If you're threadjacking you could at least be a bit more polite!

If you've paid by Paypal, send him the receipt numbers.

Also, look up eBay and Paypal help:rolleyes:

    Tusky,

You just got to be smart about bidding. Check to see who has already been bidding and their feedback. Low feedback probably means that they are new to eBay and may be weak bidders.

If you spot a few weak bidders bidding for the item you want, thats when you want to snipe* bid. Most noobs don't understand or know about automatic bidding so bidding at the very last second is very effective as it does not give them time to manually place another bid.

    Thats my top tip!:)

    *oops

Keep all your emails and if they fail to see that you haven't paid them, then start a dispute with eBay.

Thanks for that...but what exactly is 'shill' bid ?

Sorry, meant to say snipe bid.

Sniping is placing a bid at the very last second before the auction closes to prevent someone manually making a higher bid. You can even get programs to do it for you.

I got mixed up cos I was going to tell you about shill bidding!

If you see an item with a couple of bidders with very low feedback (usually have bought "privately" or the item they bought cannot be seen) this could be the seller trying to use fake accounts to try up the final sale price (taking advantage of the automatic bidding system.)

Its not that common, but not uncommon either!:(

Surely you could be shooting yourself in the foot too though ?

If an item is 5.00 but they have maximum bid of 10.00.

You come along at last second and bid 6.00...they are gonna win the item surely.

    Just saw this.

Headshot was subject to this (allbeit on a much larger and more nasty way)

Full details on "someone in my account" thread in this very same forum!

    Auction:

    Shill Bidder.

Look at rose_juliet2323 . Obviously a fake account.

It doesn't always work, you're right, but they can have a good guess as to your max bid. If they do end up winning they can always worm out of their bid and the "seller" can give you a "second chance" to buy.

Tusky - my top tip for ebay would be not to use ebay to place your bids!!! go the following site: www.esnipe.com - it will place bids for you automatically. you specify how high you are willing to go and how close to the end of the auction you want your bid to be placed. there are a number of advantages in this:

1 - you can set it to place a bid for you with seconds to go, this is better than bidding with days or hours to go, in fact this is pretty stupid to do at the best of times and you will always get out bid and there is nothing a seller likes to see more than people bidding against each other with plenty of time to go.
2 - you can set it to place the bid for you, then go off and live your life and forget about ebay and all that bidding stuff. you will get a mail to tell you if you won or not, sure beats sitting at your computer watching the clock. takes the 'thrill of the chase' out of it, but if you just want an item at a good price this is the way to go
3 - you can set a 'group' - where you choose a number of different auctions and bundle them into a group and specify the maximum you are willing to pay. if you win the first one, the group is finished, so you wont wake in the morning to find that you have won a pile of the same item when you only wanted one!!!
4 - if you are willing to go as high as maybe a tenner, but come the time when your bid is being placed, if the auction is only at a fiver, it will go the smallest increment above that, therefore you (hopefully) win the item at the cheapest price possible.

you pay something like a quid for every auction you win - but you pay nothing for any auction you dont win. my reckoning is that every auction i win is saving me more than a quid with all the messing of bidding myself. by the way - i dont work for e-snipe or anything, i just have used them in the past and i think they are great!!!

That is probably just an automated thing, those emails. Strange, went through the eBay checkout where it shows your address, item and then method of payment. Then you select Paypal, it redirects you there and you send the payment, correct? No work back from the seller yet?

thought that I had a bargain on a table being sold by a power seller in Galway and with 12 hours to go they said that the owner did not want to sell. I was the only bidder and there was no reserve. I tried to report the incident to ebay but they have no link to my problem.Probaly they (ebay) have covered themselves in the small print but its wrong to start with a low price and at the last minute if its not getting the right responce to pull it back. I'm mad at ebay

I won't tell you who I work for cos I don't wanna be flamed ;) but withdrawing items before the final twelve hours is technically allowed. The eBay help page for this is here : http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/sell/end_early.html

Ebay may be able to give the guy a warning for sure but without an item number and copies of your emails its hard to tell. If he stated in the listing it was for sale elsewhere and can be withdrawn.. well..

don't get me wrong I've had this happen to me and it is annoying to say the least. but powersellers know how eBay works and what they can get away with. They know all the loop holes and exploit them every chance they get!! but then so do people who use sniping sites.. its every man for themselves in there :S

At the end of the day it is only a venue and they cannot force anyone to sell an item or make someone pay for something.

There are bargains to be had if you know what you want, or within certain area's like clothes, electronics from the US are definitely cheaper, stay away from large asian sellers (- crap postage and quality for the mmost part) and do your research.. ask everything before u bid.

Am happy to help with other ebay stuff :)

That means he's been taken off for some reason. It'll make a stronger case for you if you have to claim your money back thru the PPBP or EBPP (buyer protection programs) however you haven't said how you paid.. so if it was by paypal get them to reverse the payment now. They ahve a irish phone number
