On Friday, a press release was put out by IBM unveiling the processor to be used in the upcoming Nintendo Wii.

The processor, code-named Broadway, apparently uses 20% less power than Gecko, the GameCube's processor did. It is also 50% faster at a speed of 729 MHz.

"The first chips are in our possession," said Genyo Takeda, Senior Managing Director/General Manager, Integrated Research & Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd. Therefore, it is safe to say mass production of the Wii will begin soon.

I heard on another site using the same press release that it was likely it was the G5 which uses a minimum of 1.2GHZ clockspeed apparently  .

Anyway IBM were designing a low power consumption G5 for Apple before they switched to Intel but they were warping the cases on the laptops (metal case) and so they never built one but they were still researching it before Apple left suddenly for Intel. They had been working on it for over a year.

I reckon Nintendo could get cheap chips from IBM if they were willing to put the developed, low power consumption chip in Wii because it would mean the research money and time spent making the processor would not be wasted.
