Those dopey bastard in Sun have bundled the Google desktop and Google Taskbar Spyware into their Java Update without TELLING anybody about it.

Have to turn automatic Java update off everywhere now :(

bastards, may they rot in hell :( (its after 5pm)

    Here we go.

This is what I found happening exactly

    http://corfield.org/blog/index.cfm/do/blog.entry/entry/Java_5_and_Google
The Java installer offered me the Google Toolbar (pre-checked) and the Google Desktop (not checked)

But I do not enable automatic java updates (default interval is monthly ) like most who would never have seen this at all. As far as I am concerned Google Toolbar is quasi spyware and should not be auto pimped onto peoples rigs by Sun , especially ticked. At least the insidious Google Desktop was unchecked...in update 8 it was anyway.

If the Google Toolbar mysteriously appears in your browser you know who to blame .

Bit of history about this alliance here Somebody LIED !

We will be adding some options to the Windows JRE installation from java.com. These options will allow downloading and installation of the Google toolbar (and possibly other Google tools in future) as part of the Windows JRE installation. I want to emphasize that these will be options. If someone doesn't want these tools they can easily opt out and still download and install the JRE.

Should be an opt in not an opt out mate :(

The system in question was an XP pro machine which should have defaulted to enterprise installer which _allegedly_ comes with no google spyware , options or no options.

I recommend that all system maintainers with networks and XP Pro disable Java Updates in the Java Control panel in the interim :(

I would not consider Google Toobar or Desktop spyware but I understand the point being made about bundling and installing software without permission.

That is weird though as I ran the updater and and it says there is no 1.5_08 update available _07 is the latest and I download the offline Java installer and it too was the _07 build from java.com

Bundling with pre-checked options is the new craze and loads of 'regular' applications do this but yes it is annoying to a degree.
