I'm normally anti death penalty, oh but only to have it in this instance. You'd put a dog to sleep for less.

The problem is that people like this start out committing little crimes, which are generally ignored by the Gardai and parents. Things like throwing stones at people's windows. They then move onto bigger things when they know they can get away with it. stealing cars and burning them out. throwing fireworks at people as they walk down the street. knocking people over for their mobiles etc.

It is then that they might take a step to far and throw a petrol bomb into a house or a car with children in it. This is pretty much what happened with Kayleigh Ryan of Lenihan Avenue, Limerick, when she was burned to death at the age of four. the people who did that were allowed get away with smaller stuff first. they did not wake up one morning and decide to burn a house to the ground.

The people who set fire to Millie and Gavin McNamara have probably gone through the same process.

What needs to be done is to have the absoloute bejesus scared out of these people before they move onto larger crimes. Examples need to be made of people, once convicted, they are identefied by the media. They need to be given stiff sentences. whether it reforms them or not is irrelevant. at least they will be off the street for several years so the rest of us can have some peace and quiet. If you want to waste money trying to turn them into good little boys and girls then be my guest, but the chances of doing so are slim.

The judges also need a goood kick up the arse as well. If they keep handing out suspended sentences like smarties then it defeats the purpose of Gardai risking their necks to go after these thugs.

Also remove the word "concurrent" from the statute books. You commit one crime with a manditory sentence of 2 years, you get two years, if you commit the crime twice you get four years, three times will get you six years..
