You get your email address/college computer username when you register in Freshers' Week. Take the ISS (Information Systems Services) class thingy on the Monday after getting registering and getting your student card. It's generally a combination of your surname and initial and is formatted username@tcd.ie. The address for the webmail site to check the email is http://mymail.tcd.ie.

Quite a lot of TCD people use Facebook yes. However, it has been unable to take hold here as much as it has in the UK and USA (probably due to the fact that many other Irish colleges weren't on it) and has declined in popularity in the wake of Bebo.

Definitely. Bebo, however, has a much more colourful and customisable interface which is what makes it so popular. In essence: Bebo is shiny. I've always been intrigued by the "Too close for missiles, I'm switching to guns" comment at the bottom of some FaceBook pages. OT, yes. But I'm still intrigued....

I don't know anybody who uses facebook. Equivalently I do not know one tcd student who doesn't have a bebo account.

By the way your email address / username is arbitrarily made by mashing up different bits of your name. Some of us are stuck with quite unfortunate ones... :mad:

Really? I know quite a few people at TCD who refuse to join Bebo - and some of them are on Facebook. But I find that generally the people on Facebook are people who know a lot of people at universities in the UK, the US, and Canada - which is the reason I joined it in the first place. I can't stand Bebo, and in fact I would delete my account except nobody checks email any more, and now that I've moved away I need to keep in touch with people somehow..

lol, "I hate it and would have deleted it but... I NEED it". It's like mobile phones. I hate the fact I'm contactable 24/7 but I couldn't imagine being without my phone. I'm no big fan of bebo, but every single person I know who swore they'd never have an account now have one. The fact that nearly every young person in ireland is on it and you can look up people from your old school etc makes it invaluable.

Yes it's coded badly, yes it's limited but that's what makes it preferable IMO. The fact that you can't search it for specific people on it too means it does have a certain amount of privacy from randomers. It's only friends or friends of friends or people you used to know who can find you.

i'm down to one out of all teh hard core anti-beboers without an account, though i do use the site alot less than i did, and i still hate it, facebook is far superior. Alot of my class would be on facebook, few have m8's in other countries others i dunno, they just are...

Sure, the site has some pretty hideous bugs, but I'm willing to overlook them. To be honest I think it's just people being big elitists when they refuse to use bebo, I don't see what the big deal is...and drawing on people's whiteboards is great fun

I have a facebook too, but I haven't logged on to it in over 3 months...

Just paid my accommodation fees and my tcd email address was displayed on the online epay form. Presume the same is true when you pay the student charge.. that bit of the website doesn't seem to like my visa card this morning.
