Have been using skype for a fair bit but only computer to computer. Now i want to change the housephone to Voip.
If i get an ata box, will the computer need to be on constantly for me to make and receive voip calls?
Whats the difference between an ata and router? Which is better?
what is the procedure for making calls on normal phone with voip. press 00 or what? Am i right in saying that both voip calls and analog calls will come in our normal phone if we use an ata or router.
    Really appreciate any help!

No the ATA connects to the router.

Routers are mainly used to pass the Internet from cable or DSL to the PC's.

ATA connects to the router and are used mainly for making calls.

Now there's integrated Routers and ATA.

No, most ATA's have a Dial plan option, there's how you specify how to dial the numbers so if you are in Dublin you dial the Dublin number like for argos 2161616, if your dial plan is setup to be in cork you only dial the local number without 021, etc.

Yes, you can make the calls using the ATA and most Irish voip providers will give you an 076 number so you can receive calls in the ATA.

Another option is to port you eircom number to the voip provider I think only Blueface.ie and maybe Freespeech.ie can do that for you. If you are using NTL broadband you won't need to pay line rental to eircom if you port your number, if you use DSL I think you will need keep paying for line rental if you port the number. But make sure you test it before you decide to port your number.

You can find lots of info on voip-info.org/ and also an Irish provider blueface.ie
