i have been given this project in work to find a system for asset tagging pc's in the companies that we support

i was thinking something like a pda with barcode reader and barcoded labels on the pc's

so the engineer can scan each pc in when they go to site and build up a database for each site.

anyone ever seen something like this or heard of it ?

Yeah, the old place where I worked had asset tagging on on technology (printers, computers, monitors, servers etc...)
A barcode was attached to this tag. The tag also had the number, which was also set to be the hostname of the PC, making it very easy for remote takeovers and so on.
A database was then kept with the desk location that each asset was located at. We didn't actually USE the barcode on them, but they were there for future.
