tv card problem

    i have this tv card:
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=a04bk&doy=11m9&source=15

    its worked fine with my gfx card for years but that card is broken so i've had to go back to my onboard gfx. this is my motherboard:
    http://uk.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=13&l3=64&model=229&modelmenu=1

    now, when i load the software i get an error saying "graph cannot preview".

    i used to get the error if i was playing a video and tried to open the tv software while it was still running but it would work on its own.

    i've got the latest drivers for the gfx and the tv card. any ideas on how to solve this?

    i'm running xp pro sp1 (not sp2 for reasons i won't go into)

    edit: just installed sp2 and i still have the problem

    It sounds like the graphics card can't create an overlay at that resolution/colour depth/refresh rate combination. Very common with onboard graphics chips. What resolution and colour depth are you running in?

    Yeah possibly an overlay issue though also could be to do with directshow and video codecs (re-install WMP10 or WMP11).

    Where did you get the drivers for the integrated graphics from, the latest ones are always on the VIA Arena site.

    i've narrowed it down to a problem with the software because i installed two other generic tv card software programs and they both worked. but i prefer to use the one that came with it because the other ones are very awkward to use

    i tried multiple resolutions and colour depths from 640*480 all the way up. changed the colour depth for each one too. no joy

    i don't think its to do with codecs since it works with my other gfx card and with other software. i got the gfx drivers from asus.com. i'll try those via ones now thanks

    edit: just installed the latest drivers from via and nothing

    Well one theory it could be;
    The program you prefer to use when it was first installed could have stored its settings somewhere in a folder or in the registry. It may have paired itself to the original graphics card in the system hence the problem you are having. Even though you uninstalled it did not remove the remnants/settings and so when you re-install you get the same problem. Best thing to do is go on a hunt and remove everything you can find related to the program.

    Alternatively the graph cannot preview is a video codec issue you get similar errors when using a program called graphedit to visualize video codec chains & converting video. The error message could indicate something is wrong and the chain for the video codec that the program uses could be broken ?

    What is the name of this software anyway ?

    Edit: After doing a bit of Google searching it seems the first scenario I described above is the likely culprit, looking for more info (there seems to be varying causes & solutions).

    You don't have anything else running in the background that is related to media/video ?

    Edit-2: try this, enter the line below into the start menu run field
    regsvr32 %windir%\system32\qdv.dll

    Also check your registry to see if this key is missing
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]
    "VIDC.YUY2"="msyuv.dll"

    that worked. where did you find that info?

    thanks a lot. thats been pissing me off for ages

    edit: actually it sort of worked. if i open the software, then select air as the input and then cable and then scan it'll find all the channels, but if i close the program and open it again i have to do it all again. odd

    Darn it I don't have the link up but that was the only useful tip there and it was the same problem but to do with a Leadtek TV tuner card.

    The qdv.dll is part of the chain for decoding an analogue TV signal as described here & ties into the overlay mixer (strange the link I made is censored just paste in m s d in place of the asterisk).

    It looks like at least in part the decoding chain has been broken somewhat.

    You could try re-registering the overlay mixer by entering the following
    regsvr32 %windir%\system32\qdvd.dll

    If that fails you could try this, download Directshow filter manager, run it and click on troubleshooting then hit the button for restore standard Direct-X codecs and cross your fingers : )

    The other issue I saw mentioned was that when a device has been configured to output on a particular display (think original GPU) and this then changes when you attempt to view the output on another display (integrated GPU) it will prompt with the graph view error.

    The solution prompted was to reconfigure the program to output to the correct display but I don't see how without purging the program completely from the system as clearly uninstalling does not do that. You may get lucky with re-registering the various dll's needed to decode the signal but that could be hit or miss without knowing exactly which ones.

    i reinstalled windows and it didn't fix the problem. then i reinstalled again with a different cd (the version i had was a cut down lite version) and i found newer software for it on driverguide.com. it works now. its all good :) thanks lads
