DVD+RW drive won't copy data onto DVD discs - help!

So my Dell desktop is now about a year and a half old. It came with a DVD+RW drive.

Whenever I've tried to burn a DVD in the past, it has never worked and I don't know why. It doesn't give error messages, it just spends ages doing something but nothing.

Today is the first day I've tried to put just actual general files onto a DVD+R disc. Whenever I drag any file into the window it says "An error was encountered while trying to copy this file." It doesn't give any more details.

"Philips DVD+RW DVD8601" is the name of the drive when I right-click the drive's folder.

Can anyone help?? I really need to copy this data onto the DVD+R discs tonight :(

What software came with the DVD-RW drive?

you cant simply drag files over tyo the dvd disk, you need some sort of software that will change it into a DVD readable disk. are you trying to put your own mpgs, avis on it ? or and actual dvd?

    Sorry its a DVD+RW not DVD-RW.

It came with CyberLink Power DVD, Sonic MyDVD, and RecordNow...

I'm trying to put mp3s onto it; I'm also gonna put word documents, avi's and various other stuff on it... I want to store data on it, I don't want to put video on it.

    I really don't know anything about DVD-R's!

Use Record Now, that should be all you need and if you are getting an error message then write it down and post it up here.

Your drive can write DVD-R/RW's just not in it's current form ;)

(Philips limited the DVD8601 to the + format only)

You can upgrade it to a BenQ 1620 drive through a firmware update (basically running a piece of software) of course this invalidates your warranty on the drive but that frankly isn't worth keeping when you get a more capable burner out of the bargain (& given how cheap DVDRW drives are).

Also if you find Sonic RecordNow too much hassle try CopyToDVD a very straight forward program just drag & drop into the window and from the action menu select write that's all there is to it (a demo version is there to try out)
