My wife( a US citizen ) and i are moving back to Ireland in the next year. Here in the US all i had to do was apply for work authorisation while waiting for a green card and i was allowed to work about 4 mths after arriving.

However on the oasis.gov site i am told that my wife doesnt need to have a permit but she does have to wait for residency which takes a year and a half before she can work here.

We are a young married couple, we cant really afford to have only one of us work (thats is i can even find a job)

Is this true or can she work straight away when she arrives.

    Any ideas/experience?
    Any help welcome and appreciated

When my wife came to Ireland, we got on right away to the local Garda station to get her residency card sorted out and they told us that it came with a PPS no. for work purposes, it didn't so we just got one at the local social welfare office and that was it. The residency card didn't take long to sort out, about a month I think and we had to send in a copy of the marriage certificate and we had a joint bank account so I sent in a copy of one of the statements. The immigration officer from the Gardai told us that they just want to make sure that any people who want to gain residency don't become "a burden on the state" so if you have joint accounts or some such then go have a chat with your immigration officer. Some are more helpful than others I believe.

Cheers very much for a quick and relieving reply!
Just wondering if you guys got married or had this done before mid 2005 cause i believe that the whole process has gotten stricter

We were married when we had the card done, it was before '05. I think that was shortly before the Government started saying they were getting stricter on work permits.

My wife (american) and I got married last year. She had no problems with anything at all in general.

Besides getting a good job, that is...

Great to hear. How did you kick the process off? Did you just have to contact the garda station and socialy security offices?

I called the Irish Consulate in NYC and they said that she needs to do nothing to be allowed to work in Ireland! Yay.
    Thanks all..
