Weird Audio Problem

Something strange happened to my laptop last night. I was playing a game and it shut down, presumably from overheating as it was connected to ac and it was a very sudden shutdown. I left it to cool down for about an hour and it seemed to be working fine then.

Fine apart from some weird problem playing mp3s. When I start playing them they seem okay, but then after a few seconds the seem to slow down slightly, kind of like a tape that's been stretched. There are some differences between pitch and tone. This happened regardless of what program I used to play the mp3 (For the record I tried Sonicstage, iTunes, Windows Media Player, Video Lan Classic and Media Player Classic) and whether I used internal or external speakers. It also had this effect on the audio on video files.

The sound is now completely gone. The only peep I can get out of it is a harsh popping sound when I change the volume.

Any ideas as to what's wrong or how to fix? Or is the audio on my laptop completely borked.
