Cant Seem to Find a Job

Im 21, male, and I am doing a Full Time College Course. That being said, my course is less demanding then others, so I do have a lot of flexible time. Last year, during both semesters, at least one weekday was completely empty for the entire year...so I only did 4 days, and on the days I was in, I only had 2 lectures once a week and one lecture the other 3 days.

Anyway, the point is, im finding it hard to get a new job. I have a job, but its completely unreliable, and its in the area of Market Research. Its a kind of 'come and go' thing and although the hourly wage is good, its based on the fact that youre only getting paid this week, but you might not have work next week.

Winter is always the worst time for the job, so ive made a firm commitment to move out and find pastures anew. Thats easier said then done. Now, I havent tried the temp Xmas staff in stores yet, and im going to in the next week, but so far ive recieved rejection letter after rejection letter/e-mail in everything ive gone for

I go for normal, Part Time, student friendly jobs such as retail outlets, administration work, weekend work, promotional work, cinemas, bookstores, music stores...basically, anything I have an interest in and even things i dont

In two places, I was called for interviews...told it was 99% certain i was going to get the job, and then got a rejection letter in the post. One job even praised my knowledge and experience, but said they just wouldnt process my application. I dont have a criminal record, I havent ever been in court or in trouble with the police, and only had one bad experience with a previous employer but didnt bother to put them down on the CV cause i only worked there 4.5 weeks

Its getting a little ridicilous at this stage because ive bills to pay for college etc and im sick of having to get hand outs from my parents because i cant afford to go out for a night, or go to the cinema, or buy a cd etc

Stick with the Market Research man, you should be able to get any amount of evening / saturday shifts. Friday's are no prob at all. TBH I was in ur suitation last year, and I came to the conclusion that nobody wants someone part time who is going to **** off in a yrs time. They are looking for the 1st yrs in college who may last the pace with them... Its frustrating I know but stick with it.

Yup, you need to buy a suit man. It doesn't matter what kind of a job you are trying to get, you still need to wear a suit to the interview. It just gives off a good impression if you are dressed well and look professional.

I dunno if a suit is really necessary, I mean, if I had an interview in the local Spar, I wouldn't want to turn up dressed better than the manager...?

Although, I suppose it would send out a good signal that you really wanted the job...

Actually yeah, get yourself a suit!

Also, it can often be luck of the draw with these things where the job is unskilled so really everyone is pretty much the same unless they possess the unique bonus of being friends with/related to the manager/owner.

Maybe if you try local supermarkets? Tesco etc.?

I'm in a similar position, but I'm holding out on some of the easier jobs as I don't want to end up in some of the horrible ones I've done before including the supermarkets experience. It can be tough, but one of the main problems seems to be that employers can often take their time getting back to you so your unsure how its going, and often they just wont get back to you at all.

Good luck though, and even if its not a full suit try a nice jacket with a short, tie, and slacks if its the suit jacket overly business look you want to avoid. Too casual in an employers mind means perhaps laid back.
