Something Went BANG

I turned on my PC last night, and there was a loud BANG.
It looks like its the power supply (pressing the power button has no effect).
I opened the case, and there was some buildup of dust in there (plus a burnt smell from the power supply).

    1. Is there a chance that something else was fried?
    2. What could have caused it? There wasn't a huge amount of dust, but it was noticeable. I have the PC plugged into a surge detector, so I assume/hope it wasn't a power spike.

    Thanks in advance....

Did somebody flick the voltage selecter at the back of the pc? Seen it happen so many times, its stopped being funny.

PSU just crapped out. Happened to me before. Hopefully it didn't surge the internals of your PC on its way out (mine was fine with a new PSU).

They should really put those on the inside.

They should, had a girl on the phone once. Her explanation was the RJ45 connecter was red and so was the switch, so she flicked it. took me 1 hour to get that much out if her.

Back on topic, if the power supply was a cheap make odds are it took out a few things with it. More than likley the motherboard.

What make/model is the power supply? Did it come with the case? Doesn't sound so good. :(

It came with the case (Antec Sonata, about 2 years old - the PSU is labelled as an Antec PSU, and is 380w).

I'll pick up a new PSU today so, and cross my fingers that the mobo and memory are OK.

Do you think that the dust caused it, or something else?

After shutting down, I turn off the PC at the mains (socket switch). I wonder if switching it on/off over a long period of time just increased wear and tear on the PSU?

Oh, and I've never touched the voltage selector switch at the back.

It could have been anything, psu's are on my top 3 of parts that randomly die. It might or might not have taken something with it. If you had hit the switch then you almost certainly would have taken a few things out with it.

I hope it didn't take anything else out, krazy_8s.
    Thanks for your help.

Same thing happened to me a few weeks back (poxy thermaltake!) and it seems the mobo got fried too, I found a nice cheapo one on ebay for E30 today, should be here by the end of the week, I really hope its the only thing that blew, as I dont ahve the time or cash to replace everything.

    S.

Just out of intrest what PSU did you have and what did you buy?

Had an antec psu go pop on me aswell. Came with the case. With all that power running throught them I suppose it makes sense not to skimp on the psu.

There was a power cut in kilkenny last night, and some the power dimmed momentarely in surrounding areas.....

Might have been enough to kill a cheap PSU.......

LOL @ the red switch on PSUs :)

Just to close off on this, the new power supply worked fine. Got an Antec PSU from Komplett, and that worked first go. Nothing else was fried.

I'm still breaking out in a cold sweat when turning it on, though... is that normal? :)
