oooh Was it advertized as a Digital SLR? Cause it's not an actual Digital SLR camera!! It's an SLR-like or pro-sumer camera, simply put it is a fixed lense camera.

    Fuji S5000

What did you pay for it? I hope it wasn't very much! :(

It's known as the FujifilmS5000 in America, here it's the S5500.
As DrummerBoy stated, it's a fixed lens camera, but it's a good one at that.
You wouldn't expect to pay anything over €200 for that nowadays.

By the way, it's generally better that you ask these questions before[/b] buying the camera ;)

yeah, i know, but ah well

    was 175 incl postage

brand new with loads of stuff

So, what IS a proper SLR? I thought it was just a cam with all the SLR settings.

Is this one just an SLR without the changeable lense???

It's a normal camera with slr capabilities. You wont be able to change the lens. You will possibly be able to get a wide-angle converter or some filters tho.

    Hi

I upgraded from a s5000 to a Olympus E500 earlier this year and can honestly say that while it is a good camera there is a huge gap between it and a proper DSLR, everything just happpens so much more slowly. Shutter lag was the biggest problem I had even when the scene had been composed and the exposure set by half pressing the shutter button.
I would reccomend using it in 3MP mode as the 6MP is interpolated in camera and slows things down even more.
The s5000 has since been upgraded twice to the s5500 (s5100 in US) and then S5600 (s5200 in US) which addressed most of the problems.

It is a good little camera just dont expect too much from it especially with moving subjects.

An SLR is a single lens reflex camera... gotta run to work now but,

    Hope that explains it somewhat!!!

Well, I just need a new camera to start to use the SLR settings, and hopefully take nice pictures

Ill prob just sell it and get a new one in a year or 2

Does it generally take nice photos?

I read reviews n all online before I got it and most were positive, the main bad point was the shutter speed, but the sample photos seemed nice

I'll be mainly taking photos at my mates' gigs, and other stuff to edit in PS

    cheers!

Hi, I don't usually hang out in this part of the boards but had a quick query which kinda links to the comments above. I had a FugiFinepix E550 till it broke a month ago....don't get me into the cost of repair details...but I was happy with it, but now feel I wouldn't mind something a little bit more pro, as photography is something I'm interested in. I'm very amateur but have the opportunity to do a bit of photography with my work, etc, so would like to improve my skills. Anyway, I 'm half tempted to go DSLR but had also been looking at the Fugi Finepix E9500....a prosumer? camera. Any comments? Now this S5600 might not be a bad option either.

Most of my attention has been on Fugi cos I have the memory cards, lead, etc from the dead camera and so it would be handy....I know Olympus use the same cards, so that might also be an option....The Olympus E500 looks like a cracker of a camera but may be too big budget for me....I'd be prepared to go around the €400-550 mark. And also don't know if I want to get into all the buying of lenses etc....is a prosumer a way to try it out? or will I get a feel for SLR at all with a Fugi 9500/5600?

    Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Some of these prosumer cameras (fixed lens with slr functions) does a decent job compared a to a entry-leven dslrs kits out there. Out of box, a Sony R1 has better glass and features than say a 350D out of box (kit lens). (A four-year-old Sony 717 effectively has a 38-200mm F2.0).

However, fixed lens camera is just that - fixed. It might be sufficient for someone who just want to continue taking really good pictures, but if someone want to experiment, try new things and shoot new subjects, thats where 350D and the like comes to form!
