sRGB vs AdobeRGB vs ProPhotoRGB

I am using the beta release of Adobe Lightroom for my RAW work flow, which by defaults exports to AdobeRGB.

To try it out I selected ProPhotoRGB, as it is a much larger colour area. The images..

..seemed fine in the Microsoft Image Viewer (it is the RAW version, from PowerTools) but when I upload them to Flickr the colours were wrong. Unless I downloaded the image and viewed it again in the Microsoft Image Viewer.

So my question is, are you better off sticking with sRGB AdobeRGB for general useage? What exactly is the point of ProPhotoRGB if it displays incorrectly? Is it for print?

I'm going to delete and replace my photos on Flickr for the Fire Installation (which is annoying because I have some nice comments), and I would like to get it right this time

Instead of deleting, use the Replace button :)

    You'll keep your comments then.

    Not sure about ProPhotoRGB tbh.

Found this on the subject -

They claim sRBG is best for web or any monitor viewing, and AdobeRGB is good for printing if you can find a printer that supports it (a lot only do sRGB)

ProPhotoRGB is good for editing as it is a much larger colour space, but there seem to be issues with it and a computer monitor can't even display the extra space so people wonder if it is that useful.

I think Safari on the mac is the only web browser to natively support any other colourspace other than sRGB. That will display all your hard work in it's glory, the rest just 'guess' what to display.
    I think.

You should generally convert to sRGB for final output. This applies to anything you want to display on the web, and for most, if not all print services. Monitors generally only display a subset of even sRGB (though there are a few extremely expensive options, eg. here, which claim to support Adobe RGB), while printing has a slightly different colour gamut. Your selected colour profile will convert to something which displays on your monitor, but there'll be loads of other colours that your monitor will be incapable of displaying.

Adobe RGB and ProPhoto RGB are best used as working spaces, but have the disadvantage that you generally can't use the images directly. There's a good article comparing them all with nice graphs on on Luminous Landscape here
