Burning DVDs

Looking for a bit of help here:

dont have specific hardware (I'll post that later)

    Generally the set up is:
Deccavideo DVD player (region free :) )
    Windows XP
    Plextor DVD RW
    DVD -r disks
    DVD +r disks
    DVDSanta
    VSO Avi to DVD converter
    WinDVD

I want to put my .avi files onto DVD to watch in glorious big screen prettiness.

After converting the avi to DVD format using VSO (selecting , 4:3 format, PAL, default dvd menu , automatic optimal burn speed for image quality) it created all th eVBB files etc in a temp directory which I then imported into WinDVD and burned the file to DVD it will play in a PC fine but not in my DVD player.
Tried converting with DVDSanta as well.
Tried burning with each of the programs.
    Tried burning without a menu
Tried with a menu but no chapters beyond the inital play option.

It looks like a DVD (VOB files etc) and behaves like a dvd in any PC but the DVD player refuses to load it.
Tried it in another DVD player (more up to date than mine) but it was the same result. Just sat on "loading" .

tried it with -R and +R (thatswrite)disks in case that made a difference.

(I'll post up software versions and model numbers tomorrow) But in the meantime:
Any ideas on what could be wrong?
am I missing a step in the conversion?
Anyone know of any issues with Plextor DVD writers and DVD video files?

Is the VSO program ConvertXToDVD ?

The step where you import into WinDVD why are you doing that (is it to check the final output ?), ConvertXToDVD should go straight to burning after it's done converting the files.

I've seen some DVD players freeze on animated menus but nothing else comes to mind.

It sounds like something in your source material is the problem, when converting with VSO's program does it in the log say it corrected an audio error during the conversion ?

    8T8 : Yeah, its ConvertXtoDVD
Importing to WinDVD was only after the VSO disk didnt work. desperation....
There were no errors in the VSO logfile and it did go straight to the bruning session the first time (after that I got it to write to disk instead).
I had heard that animated emnu thing as well which is why I made another disc with no menu at all :( alas no joy was to be had.
Tried three different AVI files with the same result of "loading". (a step up from the "no disk" message I received when I gave this a go last year! :D

Weedhead: I couldnt find any free utilities. Luckily I had one that came with a graphics card and borrowed the other two off a friend - he's away for a month so cant ask him what he did.

Do you have access to Nero try using Nero Vision to make a DVD from the file (even the demo version should do I think).

Also if you have access to another PC try converting the file with it just in case something in your PC is the underlying cause.

No other random crashes on the machine, have you tried a run throuhg with Memtest+
