    Hi,
For some reason that is totally beyond a pleb like me my computer will not let me go on any sites with https at the start. that means that my web mail account is inaccesable as well as any site you have to login in to. This is the same with both firefox and ie. I'm in America at the mo so the internet is really the only way of keeping in touch with home. Can any one shed any light on the situation?

    cheers

Strange problem, what operating system are you running and what type of internet access have you got there? You could always setup your computer (Outlook Express or Thunderbird) to send and receive mail (unless it is hotmail or yahoo which you have to pay to use via Outlook :( ). Just remember to use your internet providers outgoing (SMTP) server name when setting it up.
In Firefox, go to Tools->Options->Advanced->Security, is Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 boxes ticked?

    Could be an MTU problem.

Thanks for the advice. Its a LAN connection which other people are using and none of them are having this problem.

I don't really know anything about ports. How do i check if there open or not?

Ask them are they using a proxy server. If so, get the settings of them, and use that.

if there are other users connected to the same access point who have no issue, make sure you have the same proxy/port settings.

check your browser/connection and make sure that http and https settings tally with your buddies ... it may be that your browser is set to use one proxy/port setting for standard http (80 or 8080) and another for https or SSL (43).

if that doesn't work, post details of your browser/proxy/port config and the actual error message you get.

    good luck
