Another Sky+ Thread

I'm getting Sky+ and thinking of the cheapest possible way of getting it.

I know it's possible to buy the box and set it up yourself but do you have to phone Sky and tell them you have Sky+? This point is confusing me. :)

I have a Quad LNB and have set up a PC Card so I shouldn't find it hard.

If, as I presume, you keep your old card, can you buy a card anywhere to use in the old box? I'd want to use my old box in my bedroom. If so, can I switch cards if I wanted to watch Sky Sports upstairs and let the rest watch coronation street downstairs?

Where's the cheapest place to buy the box (and is it much cheaper then upgrading through sky?)

    Cheers.

Yes you will need to tell Sky. A standard Sky card will not turn on the recording features of a Sky+ box. Sky have to authorize Sky+ on your card (free if you have a number of Premium channels, 15 pm otherwise).

If you want a box in a 2nd room (to watch Sky Sports) you will need to pay Sky for multiroom. The premium channels (sports) are tied to a specific box IIRC.

SkY+ feature is free on some top packages, it is €15 extra per month on 2, 4 or 6 Mix pack only packages.

A bit of a ripoff. Doesn't record "other channels" or at all with no sub. You'd be be upset with a HDD / DVD / VHS recorder that behaved like this.

If you want mainly BBC / ITV there are non-Sky receivers with Hard Disk and no sub.

I don't really want my entire Sky package in another room, as in I don't want to be paying €15 if it's rarely used. I'm just wondering if the old box can be put to some good use. :) Also, will the card work in both boxes so I can take it out of the Sky+ box and watch Sky sports upstairs?

I have all the 17 NTL channels in all rooms in my hour already so I'm not too fussed about putting the box in my bedroom. Just wondering if it's possible without the extra charge.

    Cheers.

You could get an FTV (UK Sky yellow house) card that would allow you to watch BBCs/ITV/C4/C5 plus other stuff on the bedroom box.

If you take the card out of the Sky+ box and put it in the other box:
    • You will get most of your 'Sky' paid for channels - but not movies/sports - these are tied to a specific box.
    • The Sky+ box is not operation (no recording/viewing) whilst the card is in the other box

    Cheers! Sounds alright.

Now for where to buy the box and how much does it cost to buy directly from sky? :)

The cards are tied to each individual box. Although they'll work in other boxes for the entertainment packages, the Sports/Movie channels will only work in the "home" box.

The UK FTV card only adds C4, Five and Sky3.

All the BBC & ITV don't need a card.

The FTV card without a basic UK Sky+ record only sub (£12? pm) will not enable any recording of C4 & Five on Sky+
