Theres not much out that isnt a beta. My whole system seems to be in beta stage for instance. Windows Vista 5600 (Beta). All my drivers are beta, some arent even available yet.

    Cnet is using beta video.

Google seems to base its whole empire on beta software.

What Im trying to get at is theres so much stuff that is 7/8's finished. Usable, but not fully tested. They use us to do some of that, which Im fine with, but why cant there just be fully working, non-beta systems?

Whats your experience with beta, or dare I say it, alphas? Do you use many? Are they more hastle than theyre worth from a hardware point of view?

Recently there seems to be a greater proliferation of publicly available betas, especially since Google started releasing a load of different programs, and MS recently started publicly releasing their betas (Vista and Office 2007).

No one's asking you to run your system on a beta OS with a load of beta software, but hopefully you're contributing to making these finished products by the end of things as I assume you'll be reporting bugs and whatever.

I generally use betas if there's no good equivalent available, or if I was using the previous version and the new one is allegedly greatly improved. I use Google Talk, I've tried the Google Earth Beta in Linux (though it was acting a bit funky), I was also using VMware Server Beta with good results, and I've been using Office 2007 for a few months now (no trouble with it so far either). Never gone as far as using a beta OS, but then again all my PCs are too crappy for Vista ^_^
