    Hey guys.

Im also having the power off problem.
Just to make it clear to those who havent witnessed the problem, it is not shutting down, it is literally turning "dead" intermittantly. It started 2 days ago and has happened about a dozen times since.

I dont know much about warrentys etc so Id really appreciate any advice on this one.

I bought it in Spectra in June.
My friend tells me that I will have to send it back in via apples site, then apple will send out a UPS van to pick it up.

Has anyone here had the same problem and sent back their macbook?

How long were you waiting for it to come back? Did you get a replacement or the same computer fixed [Im wondering if I should back up all my data]

Regardless, did the problem cease thereafter??

I cant begin to describe how absolutely p!s$3d off I am about this problem. It is gonna cost me a lot of time and money and work.

My first step would be to contact Spectra, they're the ones you have the contract with as you purchased off them. They may tell you to send it direct to apple.

Definitely back up your data!! Never send a computer off without backing it up!! You may not get the same computer back.

I'm not "in the know" as to how Spectra operate, but if it's anything like Galmac Computers, you should be able to drop it in and they'll repair it and you'll get it back the next day if you're lucky.

That was my experience with them when the logic board on my PowerBook broke. I dropped it in, and they had the logic board replaced and me up and running again the next day! Didn't cost me a penny.

By the way, if you're running a business or in a situation where being without your computer for a few days will cost you money, you absolutely need to get a backup Mac, and keep a bootable external backup disk around. You can get one for about €100 with Firewire/USB, and than use a program called SuperDuper! to make a bootable backup every night.

So anyway, like xebec said, get on to Spectra as you bought it there. They should be able to repair it for you or give you a replacement, depending on how long ago you bought it, or send it in to Apple for you if needed. If they can't, they will ask you to call Apple directly. They should give you Apple's freephone number in Cork for that, where you can talk to somebody and arrange the repair or replacement.

It definitely won't cost you anything beyond lost time, as it's still under warranty. Let us know how it goes.

A good day was had by all by the sounds of it, yes it should get turned around fairly swift bad news could be 2/3 weeks if it gets carted off to Holland. You should be ok though. ;)

    Thanks guys.

It hasnt happened since it booted up a few hours ago but Im not taking any chances.

I have a few things to wrap up so itll be a week or 2 before I give it in, unless of course it completely dies!

Ill post back when I contact Spectra.

Apple have admitted there are problems and you should immediately look at this.

All they will do is replace the logic board. But apparently it's a heat sensor (some users have fixed the problem themselves after gettng exasperated with Apple's service).

I had the logic board replaced in mine, and the problem started again a week or two later.

I had to kick up some sh*t and contact their european support manager directly, to get a replacement off Apple!!!

The fact that they've now acknowledged the problem officially means they've probably investigated it fully, figured out what's going wrong with the affected MacBook's, and come up with a repair procedure to fix it permanently.

Either that or, as someone suggested on IGM I think, they are taking in enough faulty machines to research the problem.
