    Hi everyone,
We're heading to Egypt next week and we're booked in to get our vaccinations before we go (literally the night before we go). They said we needed to get 4 vaccinations... Has anyone else gone to Egypt? Is this true? I dont want to get ripped off and have to pay for a vaccination for something stupid that we have no chance of getting....

I didn't have to get vaccinated but I've lived abroad in the Middle East when I was younger so maybe that was a factor. Although I don't recall any mention of it.

What are the vaccinations for exactly?

Go onto Travelvax.net I think they are recommended but not compulsory. I didnt need any when I went last November as I have been to India and South America and had them then so I was covered. To be honest I think I would have them !!! Your health is priceless incase something did happen.

They mentioned Hepititus A, Polio, Tetanus and Typhoid...

I thought it seemed a bit over the top (I was waiting for them to mention the Plague aswell)....

Sure them vaccines take a few weeks to become active so theirs no point in getting them the day before you go!

You should certainly get the Hepititus shots - you can get A from badly washed food & nobody washes food badly like the Egyptians. B is more of a body fluid thing, but it's no harm to get the shot. And while you're in there the Dyptheria/Tetnus is only a few quid more.

Either way, even if it's only a few days before you leave, it's better to have them than not - they're easy diseases to get, and not so easy to get rid of. I got the shots from my local doctor - phone ahead to make sure he has them.

    Enjoy,
    K.

Just get them. I couldn't believe the amount of people I met on my travels who took the "I'll only eat in places where they wash the food with bottled water......etc" route. Yeah right. I'd say I ate in exactly 1 place where they washed the food with bottled water. There is absolutely no reason to risk getting any of those diseases. In Vietnam, I met a guy with typhoid and I would say the poor guy was days, if not hours, from death.

Here's what the TMB has to say.

Watched one of my mates suffering through a holiday in Portugal, never mind Egypt, after picking up Hepatitis A. Never left his room for 4 days and basically missed the whole trip. As for the others, maybe you could let us know the symptoms if you get one of them?

    Better safe than sorry methinks.
