The new Drivetime programme on Radio 1 is as bad as the tv news revamp. The music for the replacement to Five Seven Live sounds like it has been ripped off one of the CDs in John Kelly's collection and has no real newsy feel to it. In fact it is actually wholly inappropriate for introducing important news stories and whats more Mary Wilson seems quite ill at ease with the whole concept. It's not exactly 'new' in any way despite the press releases saying that the 5-7 slot would be radically different and 'challenging and engaging and all that tripe. What a cock up at RTE this time!! In both TV and Radio news production they have no bloody taste at all!

We've listened to 5-7 Live for years and the format was just right. It shouldn't have been changed. I can see the hand of the marketting depts in this!!!

I seem to remember this type of change before on this program and I just switched to Dunphy on Today FM - Decent coverage of what are complex issues, not soundbites is what the people of Ireland need.

They didn't need to change 5-7 at all.

They DO need to get out of their beds earlier. BBC News/Info starts at 5.20am and rolling news mag from 6am.

RTE don't start till 7.00am and inexplicably 30minutes later the whole of August. Do they think we all have 4 week holidays?

How many commuters etc need to get up at 6am?

They have dreadfull music program in morning before 7am.

Watty, you're living in dream land, everyone knows nothing happens before lunchtime in this country. why else would the first main TV news be on at 1.00pm. The BBC are just wasting resources starting at 5.20am.:D

    Drivetime:
Don't RTE wonder how people get to work if they are Driving home at 5pm to 7pm?

It true it nearly a waste of time for shops in Limerick to open before 10am, but actually lots of people start work at 8.00am in Industry. So therfore they are in many cases out of the house before RTE get out of bed. :)

I admit TV3's moring TV blast isn't exactly full of solid news. But at 9am RTE is still showing yesterday's TV!

Yeah - if RTE aren't going to make a breakfast news show they should show some kind of information pages or news slides that have the main stories of the day typed up with still pictures next to them, and change the slide every 30 seconds or something - what kind of person who gets up at 6am really wants to see "The Afternoon Show"?

"Nightscreen" on RTE2 is even worse - they show page 100 of Aertel for about 2 hours in the early hours of the morning. It would be one thing if it was up to date, but last time I saw it it was recorded at about 3.10 pm on some day in March 2005. That means that the 3-week trip for 2 to Turkey I can find out about on page XYZ was available last May. Does that count as false advertising?

Leave TV3 alone - at least they try! Ireland AM beats EuroNews or something aimed at pre-school kids by far!

RTE Morning News on RTE ONE won't happen until mid 2007.

I don't think I would use the word TRY.

TV3 don't have any news during prime time and have only one Current Affairs programme and haven't even tried to provide some news worthy documentries.

TV3 provide Ireland AM to make their Quota of Irish Produced shows.

Dave Fanning should go back to 2FM, what they have done with drive time on RTE Radio has been to pull in the two drive time shows together, I am surprised they didn't try to pry RTE RnaG's and RTE Lyric FM's drivetime shows on to RTE Radio One.

RTE have really spoilt the 5-7 News slot. The new format is horrible. I find more often switching to R4 and then turning radio off.
