before I start, apols lad for all da questions. Ive been attempting to fix freind/family/neighbours computers... they get a sniff that you studied computers of any kind in college and think you can solve anything! Ive a fixed a good few, but the 1 or 2 probs here and there.

    anyhow,

I installed (on request for iTunes) XP on a very old PC (we're talking 2gb hard drive, feck all ram, windows 95 on it etc...). It had an external modem cas the internal one blew up!

The installation went perfect, apart from the modem not working properly. I tried getting it to work by manually finding a regular 28k/56k (tried them all, not sure what it is, I doubt its 56) modem, selecting the port (com1 or com2) etc, it worked kinda! It connected, but wont go beyond certain sites. Its been a while since I attempted to fix it again, but I do remember seeing a screen which said (in more or less these words):
The software you are installing for this hardware
    56k External Modem [Cl]

has not pass Windows Logo testing to veriry its compatibility with XP
Continuing may impair or distabilize the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the future. XP strongly recommends that you stop now and contact the hardware vendor for software that has passed the Windows Logo testing.

this is all the details i code get from the modem:
    MRi V90 Modem
    Model E210
    and a Reg no.

    anyhelp would be greatly appreciated

When you open Phone and Modem options in Control Panel, can you query the modem and if so, do you get any response. Showing up in Device Manager too? The message you received doesn't mean that theres anything wrong with the driver, just that it hasn't been tested with XP I think. Is this a serial cable modem?

I unsure, I'll need to check it out again. It can be seen from Device Manager, but I manually installed it (if you know what Im tryin to say - I had to ask XP to find/add it). How do you query modem?

Why is it going to certain sites - Hotmail, google etc...but timing out on alot others? The cookies is cleared so its not regular previous sites visited.

The message you got with the driver just means it wasn't certified by microsoft, many people just don't bother certifying their drivers because of the hassle/cost so I wouldn't worry about it.

With it being a 56k modem you'll really want to get the correct drivers for it, older 33.6k and before used to work fine with standard drivers but things went a bit crazy when speeds moved up to 56k because that's really pushing what can be transmitted over standard lines so most of them need the specific driver to work.

Try www.driverguide.com , it's usually the best site for old modem drivers, don't sign up with your primary email, they can be a bit spammy.
