Problem receiving Irish DTT with UK STB ( Alba )

    Hi all,
In Dublin south city center, just got a Set Top Box to checkout the digital tv trials, but having no joy.

The STB is an "Alba STB2NS" - cheap and cheerful from ebay. This is a UK "Freeview" box, but my understanding was this would work with the irish DTT as long as they keep with the MPEG2 transmissions.

No stations are picked up with the autoscan. If I manually set it to channel 54, they signal quality is "Very Good" and the strengh is a least 60% and has got to ~85% in some positions (when I'm holding it :-) ). Problem is when I ask it to search this channel 54, it results in no stations found.

Any ideas? should this work? Have alba added some limitation to the box to only work in the UK?

    Thanks for you thoughts

How old is the STB? Older UK STB's don't support 8k FFT's, only "newer" (generally most since 2001, though) ones do - as the UK uses 2k FFTs, and we... don't.

Don't buy a UK box especially for the trials. At some stage it will let you down.

I confirm an alba does not see the Clarmont Carn at all.

Sagem, Kaon and ReelBox all work.

The ReelBox might have MPEG4 support also.

The Kaon and ReelBox also have Satellite tuner. The ReelBox has HDD and DVD writer.

I knew that the trials could change technology and may not be stable - so I picked up this factory reconditioned STB for as cheap as possible, If I got a year of quality picute in 16:9 i'd be happy.

watty, seems that the alba won't work, i'd love to know if this is a limitation I can get around (i.e. new/hack firmware etc...), any thoughts out there?

MYOB, google and the instructions are telling me nothing about alba FFTs. It should definitly be newer than 2001.

    Thanks for the info

Hi - I was in Sainsbury yesterday Sept 16th and picked up an Alba Freeview machine - £17.95 and set it up. Did Autoscan and while it appeared to pick up 8 channels - there is no picture or sound at all on any.

I was hoping that I was going to get the Irish Channels on the DTT trial and it would have been a bonus to get any UK channels -(I live in Drogheda).

But I am wondering what box is needed to get Irish Channels or do I need to do a manual search to get it to work.

I only have ariel and get BBC 1, 2, and Channel 4 Very good 99.9% of the time - better than TV3 and RTE 2 -- UTV is poor sometimes.

TG4 always comes in crystal clear
