I moved to cork last wednesday, and want to see a movie. I dont like going to movies by myself. Anyone wanna join me? Maybe have a pint before and if the movie is really bad, perhaps some after to forget :)

I am not even sure what is really playing but there must be something ...

http://www.corkcinemas.com/ for listings for the gate cinema, prolly your best bet if you want to have one or two before/after

you'll prolly get more boardsies along if you mention beers :D or at least the ppl who regularly drink at boards events...

So I can count you in? :P

The gate is literally at my front door, so its really easy for me.

Crank looks good, anyone that liked the transporter or transporter 2 would probably like that (although I havent seen it it seems to be in the same style with the same actor who appears now to be typecast and probably wont ever be able to get a role as anything else).

You, Me and Dupree might be a good comedy, the trailers seemed that way.

What do people feel like? I just wanna get out and do something :)

If it's sci-fi, horror, foreign (especially subtitled) or exceptionally good and not a formulaic piece of American sh*te, you can count me in. Hmmm...and I wonder why I end up going to the flicks on my own mostly

Count me in if it's Crank. Hopefully the time will suit and I've a soft spot for what'shisname beating the living ****e out of people.

hehe. I want to see that one as well. I dunno if anyone else is interested. I plan on going to purgatory tonight but that isnt until 11, dunno if tonight is good for anyone else. Its getting late today to plan much anyway, as I'd imagine that most people already have plans.

I probably have the most flexible schedule, so why dont some of you others that want to go name a pub to meet up at before and pick a movie and name a time. As long as its all in the city centre it shouldnt be a big deal for me to make it :)

I've seen Crank and Severance this week, both are worth a watch but Severance is no longer on at the Gate and Crank is only on at 6:45 (they've been doing something bloody daft with screen times lately, I guess they're struggling to compete with the multiplexes out of town).

Of the current selection, Right At Your Door would let ye go for 9:30 showings and still make Purgatory. (The rest of what's on looks like crap, frankly, though other people's mileage may vary).

Incidentally, if there's a gang of ye heading into Purgatory give me a shout on the way. I'm flying to spain at stupid o'clock in the morning but wouldn't mind calling along for a while :D

Most movies most of the time look like crap to me :P

As for purgatory, I am going, dunno who else is, although odds are blitzkreig is too. I am easy to pick out, I have blue hair (hey I did it before I moved, and its fading out anyway! :)

    The ~er is very important - there's a million Blitzkrieg's around. ;)

I can't decide what to do tonight. I really wanted to go to the casino, but the longer I stay in work the lazier I'm becoming. There's a chance I could go there and still make Purgatory. Where ever I end up I'll be wearing a grey Slipknot t-shirt so I should stand out against the mainly black crowd.

I can't seem to get any cinema listing site to load so I don't know when Crank is showing. Leave it 'til Monday/Tuesday next week?

so its starting to look like monday, now all we need is a movie (crank was mentioned, is that ok with everyone?) and a time. The movie will of course dictate the time :)

A pre-movie meeting place such as a pub that is well known/easy to find might not be a bad idea, that way people dont just stand on the street waiting for everyone but instead have some place to sit and what not.

The bodega is very near, if people want a choice, they have coffee, food, beer, and all that along with an indoor smoking area. Of course we can go anywhere I am just trying to make it easier by tossing out suggestions :)

Bugger - no late showing in the city. I'm working until 8 so I'm out :(

I'm off to the casino so my making Purgatory is entirely dependant on how well I do in the poker tournament.

@Fysh/Tree - I'll ring you if I'm going but it kinda looks like neither of you are....

Have we picked a day, place and movie?

No single day is going to work for everyone, maybe it will end up being two groups that go, if any.

This is rapidly falling flat on it's face. I'm going to chance going to see it Thursday at 6:45. I vaguely remember somebody saying Le Chelie was closed, so if anybody wants to meet up before the show, I suggest the Classic (if only because I can't remember the name of any other bar on that street).

I won't guarantee being on time though - it's a nightmare trying to park around there....

What street? Where is this? I tried to find it but that didnt work out that well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,660 ✭✭✭Blitzkrieger

North Main street. If you head from the North Gate cinema towards Washinton street (into town), go past the pizza place on the corner and it's on the left before you get to the traffic lights.

Ok, that is easy enough to find. mapopolis (what I have on my mobile) doesnt show pubs only restaurants :( I might look at seeing if you can create a 'pub pack' for it, although the map data for county cork as it stands is 4MB which is a lot for a portable device.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 277 ✭✭trixter

Oh and since I live right across the street from the gate, I will also look at what other places are on N Main. I should have a list up in a few hours, I just dont feel like leaving *right* now :)

No previews for that on Thursday in the city so maybe some other time? Or we could drive out to Mahon, then re-enact the movie on the way home :)

list of places that serve alcohol on N Main between washington street and the river.

Vicarstown bar, 5 doors north of castle street on the east side

    Captain Americas, east side
    The Raven, west side
    Right at liberty street

The Classic, 2 doors south liberty street on the east side

Only the raven and the classic had aparent outdoor seating (both had heat lamps, the classic appears to have better cover if its raining).

Le Chelie is closed, however it appears that a new restaurant is going to be there in its place and there is a sign in the window indicating they want workers if you are looking for work you may wanna hit em up.

Given the state of everything, I am going to vote for The Classic as it appears to be the nicest looking place, although that doesnt say anything for the quality inside :)

Now that we have a pre-movie meeting place, we still need to firm up the movie and time.

Crank is 90 minutes and starts at 6:45 at the Gate
There really isnt any other movie showing at the Gate that seems to me to be worthwhile, and no one mentioned any other that is actually playing there (talladega nights isnt playing there aparently).

Perhaps another cinema would be in order?? And if so where??

I have no transportation anywhere, so would need to know of a bus map or something or get a ride (or not go, but that was never part of the plan :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,660 ✭✭✭Blitzkrieger

Ok then. I'll wander into the Classic around 6:10 wearing whatever comes up in the rotation. That should give enough time for anybody who wants to come along to be fasionably late for a drink but still make the movie.

I will make it really easy then. I will be there THURSDAY at 6pm (give or take) outside at one of the tables, probably with cigarette in hand, wearing god knows what, but to make it easy. I have sorta blue hair (its fading and there are blonde, possibly green spots in it now, it looks really bad but I havent bothered to go buy dye). I have one hand, and I can ensure that I will be wearing a short sleeved shirt or if long sleeved they will be pushed up so its effectively a short sleeved shirt. My jeans will be blue like my hair :)

Cant miss me, look for the most goofy looking person there!

Does this mean that you are going or are you just gonna be at the book club and inviting us to stop by after?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 592 ✭✭✭Deer

It means I organise the bookclub which will be at the wine bar and I'm sure that there would be no objections to people stopping by! Seriously if you want to meet people you can meet the gang down in meades!

I will make an effort to convince people, but should they be unconvinced, where is this wine bar?

Too bad you couldnt come with us :(

I got dye today so dont bother looking for blue hair, it should be black although this dye seems a bit odd, I hope it doesnt come out purple like its looking now :(

I will still be the goofy guy sitting at a table outside though :)

How do you get your jeans on?
normally one leg at a time, how do you do it?

While I have one hand, I can do most anything anyone else can, even if I dont possess the talent to do them well. I cannot play classical guitar, but I havent found much else I cant do, although hurling seems like it would be a bit hard for me, I played lacrosse, the net at the end helps and generally the games are similar, although in lacrosse its legal to hit someone as hard as you want with the stick which makes it fun :)

meh that isnt a walk, I live *right* across from the gate and walk there almost daily (I get bored, and since I dont know hardly anyone in cork I go over there to try to meet people at the bars and at least have some conversation. :)

I walked up and down olliver plunkett (once in each direction, and part of it twice) and couldnt find meades. Can you shed some light on where exactly it is?

I know the oven, post office, an brodhran, an brod (no ability to do fadas). I am certain its somewhere in between the oven and an brod, but I just cant find it. I even walked into the dodgy part of olliver plunkett, ya know where the sex shops are and its dimly light, and decided it couldnt be further down that end.

Either a cross street or some sort of landmark. A north/south side of the street might be helpful too. I cant guarantee that anyone else will go, but I will at least show up after if nothing else is going on :)

    Thanks

    -- edit
I found that someone lists it as 26 oliver plunkett street, however my map software on my mobile doesnt list anything for 26, but I found someone 'next to the gpo' is 30, or so its claimed, so that tells me where to search. If you feel like providing more precise information that would be great, would make it easier, at least I know roughly where to look now :) Also, once I get inside where do you guys hang out normally? Is there some way I can find the book club?

Don't look at me - I once walked past a pub three times and still couldn't find it. :o

For the sake of being easy to spot, I'll wear a bright green t-shirt with a small comic strip on the front of it.

I figured people would find me, the hair being easy, but I got sick of it looking like a parrot ... That should make it easy though, and at least we know what came up in rotation today :)

As for meades I still dont know where it is (it probably had too large of a sign and that cause me to miss it) but after considerable google searches I found the rough area (or so I think). I also dont know where the book club will be inside meades (or even who is a member of the book club). Since I am new and all that I dont know anyone and if I end up being the only one that goes I wont know who to say hi to :/

I will be wearing a light tan t-shirt that reads 'I make stuff up' on it. That should be fairly easy to spot coupled with my previous description of myself. Hopefully Deer or someone can help me a bit with the remaining questions.

With all that said, I am glad all of this is finally happening, although it would have been more fun if 20 of us showed up randomly but on short notice that is generally hard to pull off.

Trixter - Meades is right across the road from Milanos. I think it is 26 Oliver Plunkett Street. You'll spot us because there will be a book on the table and probably one guy and a load of girls if everyone turns up!!

Gotta go - enjoy crank!! And maybe we'll see you later!:)

Meh - I've too many books to read to join a book club.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 277 ✭✭trixter

The movie was ok, turned out only blitzkrieger and myself showed up. Crank is an action movie, there was however some, in my opinion, really bad directing and editing that took away from the movie. I think they also dumbed it down for people in a few different places to try to make it easier for people to understand what was going on. They did this with fairly cheap techniques that almost made it seem like a kids show, however this movie is certainly not suitable for children.

After we went to the book club, and it was a bit awkward at first because we were the only ones that didnt read the book, or know anything about it, but soon after they finished their conversation on the book and it turned into a general conversation it was a lot more fun. I think the book club would have been more fun if we actually read the book. See the link above in this thread for a link to the book club thread.
(Deer you are welcome for the plug :) )

There was a suggestion that this be made into a club or something where on a semi-regular basis a movie is selected, then people meet at some place that serves some type of refreshing beverage (however you define that) and discuss the movie. Is anyone interested in that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,660 ✭✭✭Blitzkrieger

There's a whole film festival on next month but surely we can come up with something before then. I'm going to be busy at work until the end of the month so I'm only going to be free at odd times. There's some interesting looking films out at the moment.

Now that I'm officially back in the city (Joy!) I'll probably be heading to the flicks a bit more regularly and I'd quite happily use it as an excuse to meet some more boardsies, so yeah, a club style thingy would be cool :)
At the minute, I have plans to catch Children of Men if anyone's interested in joining me. I think its out next Thursday.

Deer has some names of people that were at the book club last night and seemed interested in this as well. More of a go somewhere quiet for a pint after and talk about it type of thing, which I dont know if people are interested in doing, although the social gathering at some watering hole isnt a terrible idea :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,294 ✭✭✭Jack B. Badd

Well, I'm all up for discussing a film afterwards. Although if I thought it was a pile of crap ye'll have to listen to each and every reason as to why it was crap. Ye have been warned!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,660 ✭✭✭Blitzkrieger

Sounds good. I'm working until 8 but i'll make it if I can. I can't find anything that confirms if there's previews for Children of Men on Thursday. How about The Black Dahlia as a backup? It's getting some bad reviews but it looks interesting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,294 ✭✭✭Jack B. Badd

Apparently Children of Men is out on the 22nd. Ditto with Clerks 2 (really wanna see that also). That doesn't guarantee that the Gate will have them then though. I'll quite happily watch The Black Dahlia anyway since its on my list fo things to see...
